Front Wheel Constant Squeal / Squeak
« on: March 31, 2006, 11:36:57 PM »

My driver front wheel has started constantly squealing/squeaking while driving.  It seems like it gets worse the longer you drive the car.  However, the weird thing seems to be that it doesn't do it that I've noticed when turning or applying the brakes just so so.  It's almost like you can find a sweet spot in the brakes to make it go away or push really hard and it goes away.  Otherwise while coasting or driving it sqeals and its seems to "speed up" as speed increases.  My first thought was the break pads needed replaced but they are still good so I'm kind of at a loss.

Any ideas?  Thanks guys!

Bearings could be bad in your hub.  Did you check both sides of the brakes?  Inside and outside pads?  Your pads could be wearing unevenly.  It could be your rotor shield touching on the rotor, though you'd have constant noise.

Mod List.  Um WAY too many to fit on here.  But the engine can handle about 800HP

Yeah... pretty much what DT said.  Do you have a lot of dusting on your brakes??

You might also take your pads out and get some anti-sqeal stuff to put on them...  Also check and make sure its not the hub assy... mine was making a whining noise at 35mph and up... of coarse that was a whine more than a squeak/squeal...

Yeah, I've checked the brakepads because that was my first thought - in fact I bought new brakepads and found that the current ones had almost no wear.

Here's some additional info.  The first wasn't totally accurate.

The sound seems to be "cyclic" in that its when the wheel is a certain spot.  As you drive you can hear the sound speed up and its less high pitched the faster you go - almost like it's a specific spot on the rotor or something?  I was also wrong about the sound not happening while you're turning.  It does happen while turning both directions.

Well taking the great advice I'm replacing the wheel hub assembly but infortunately I can't get the damn thing off.  I've followed the instructions but it seem seized on really badly.  I have a puller and have been using a lubricant/rust remover with no luck.  Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hard to say without being there.  Why don't you list what you did do, incase maybe you over looked something.  You did disconnect the axle right?

So here's an update...

Rented a 3 prong gear puller to try to get it off.... slipped off.  Rented a axel puller with slide hammer.... didn't work.  Used a huge ass sledge hammer.... no luck, the thing won't budge.  I gave up and reassembled it and now the key won't even turn.  It's as if the car doesn't realize it's in park.  Any ideas?

Not sure why it won't start but did you think to check the "dust shield" thing on the brake ?? those get bent sometimes and make the sound you are speaking of.
