Which belt is the ac belt?
« on: March 31, 2006, 10:53:43 PM »

Hi, i'm new to the site but i love that finally there is a site for one of the most underestimated pair of cars made. I have a 97 sebring LXI v6, body kit, custom orange paint job, body kit ----the works
N E ways i want a few extra cheap phonys and i heard taking off the ac belt will help, i think i know which belt but i dont want to do it unless i know for sure. Also is it easy to take out the whole ac system to loose weight??

Thanks

Pulling the A/C system is easy.  Just make sure it's drained professionally to avoid a fine.  The belt for the A/C (if it's the same for the V6 as for the I4) is the same one that runs the power steering.  So you'll need to pick up a new and smaller belt to keep your Powersteering pump working.

Mod List.  Um WAY too many to fit on here.  But the engine can handle about 800HP

You could live without power steering, but I wouldn't advise it.  New cars are made to have the assistance of power steering.  It's not so much a convenience anymore.  Would your car be ok with out it, probably but why take that chance.  And you wouldn't gain that much horse from the power steering.  Besides, if you're going to be taking corners, it's good to have the assistance.  especially if you're downshifting and can only have one hand on the wheel.

the AC belt on the V6 is the first belt. If you are standing in front of the car it is the belt that is furthest to the left.

Driving without power steering sucks in a Sebring. Mine stalled once, and it was a B*TCH to get pulled over!

Woo Hoo....gawd thats gotta be an experience....driving a Sebring with the A/C and power steering disabled for what?...3 horsepower and phenominal loss of steering control....even at speed the thing would be like trying to steer the titanic with an oar hangin out back!!!...please folks, I'm all for trying to squeeze out some extra ponys like the next guy but don't encourage something as reckless as this, with the possibility of someone losing control of their car and plowing into you or your children because they could'nt properly steer their car, all for what?Huh?.....If you have a full blown race car and want to run it down the track like that fine, only gonna kill yourself if you are lucky, but on the street how bout the general public that gets mowed down!   Geez lets be adults here folks!

yeah, you're right. you can pull the ac belt, but you can't pull the power steering belt. that belt also drives the alternator.
honestly i still don't think it's worth it, but it's your car.

both belts are driven off the crank. there are only two belts. one drives the ac, the other drives the power steering and the alternator. the water pump is driven off of the timing belt which you can't see unless you remove the covers.

ok i pulled the ac unit and another pulley and i lost about 60 pounds and some space in engine was cleared you can tell a differance, its worth it if you have a v6 and you dont loose power steering
