Crazy Windshield Vipers

Hello,

I have a 1996 Avenger and I'm having some problems with my windshield vipers. They don't seem to stop at the correct location, ie. the very bottom of the window. It is like their timing is way out. On the other hand, if I turn them off in the middle of a "stroke", then they seem to stop at the bottom.

A repair guy I know told me this was due to a faulty relay in the vipers and there was nothing i could do about it except for buying a new one and that it would be very expensive and not worth it for a car this age. I am in a big denial and refuse to accept this. Does anyone here know a better thing to be wrong with them or at least a better solution?

I"ve never heard them called Vipers before.  I'm assuming you mean Wipers by your description.  Relays are cheap.  And I don't know how far down they are going.  If you could get a pic up that might be more helpful.

Ah yes the deadly windsheild Viper.  Most common in areas with a rainy climate, such as Seattle or Portland, they have been known to attack many an unwatchful passerbye.  This deadly snake likes to cling to winshields, and is most active during a torrential downpoar.  They are also mostly motivated by the sound of a running engine.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

when off, is there any play when you move the wiper blades up and down? also, you can "re-seat" them to the correct position by lifting the blade (as you would to clean/replace) and near the gear part pull down a bit.

that is just the way the cars are..you have to turn them off in the middle...i mean..if you turn them off when they're coming up and close to the bottom, then they will stay right where you turned them off.
