99 ES camshaft position sensor problems
« on: March 26, 2006, 06:03:50 AM »

Here are the symptoms....

- Died twice when put into park from drive
- Died once when taking off from a red light
- No sputtering, shuts off like turning the key off
- Code 340 is stored (Camshaft position sensor circuit)

Here is what I have done
- New distributor (camshaft position sensor is built in)
- Did a quick look at the wiring harnes going into the sensor and didn't see any obvious issues
- Cleaned connector on wiring harness
- Replaced timing belt (needed to be done anyway) and cam timing was still perfect

Does anyone have any clues as to where to look next?

I was thinking about back probing the wiring harness or soldering in a new one.  Is this a common issue with these cars?

I can't seem to find a wiring diagram for any of the engine sensors. Other than buying a service manual, is there a place on the web for wiring diagrams?

Thanks a ton,

Dave

When you replaced the distributor did you reset the computer?

Mod List.  Um WAY too many to fit on here.  But the engine can handle about 800HP

Yeah, I had to pull the battery and it was out for well over an hour. I also cleared the codes with my OBD II scanner.

It's a six so I'm not sure if it's a common issue, but this is the first I've heard about it.  It's possible you ECU is junk.  PM a guy named Nykon and ask him if there are any TSBs or anything about it.  He reads those things like a kid with Harry Potter.

I called the Dodge dealer and they said it is common for the crankshaft sensor to go out and signal a code for the camshaft sensor.  Apparently they are on the same circuit.  I am going to install a new one and see what happens.

I put in the new crankshaft sensor tonight and so far so good. I took it out for a drive that was long enough to get the engine up to full operating temperature. If I don't post anything more than assume it worked!
