Shifting Problems?
« on: March 21, 2006, 05:09:18 PM »

I have a 1997 Avnger 5-speed and it seems when I' in a race or just shifting fast, 3rd gear doesn't always want to go in. Even when I'm sitting still and go through the gears fast, 3rd gear seems to "reject" if i try to shift to fast. It's almost like I'm shifting too fast, and need to shift SLOWER. What the hell is going on? If there is an easy, cheap fix for this, tell me. Actaully, just tell me how to fix it period. Thanks.

Double clutch it.  That's the best way to shift into "hard gears"  double clutching is when you press down on the pedal take the car out of gear, let the pedal up.  Then press down again before going into third.  And shift normally after that.  Double clutching is wierd when you first start to do it, but once you do it for a while it'll seem normal.

Wouldn't that hurt my times? I'm a little confused on the idea still. Could you elaborate?

It might hurt your times, but if you get good at it, it shouldn't really take a long time to do.  It's an extra step yes, but you can really just slam it into gear.  When you push in the clutch it disengages the drivetrain from the motor, you shift out of gear and you put it into a higher gear, with the drivetrain running on a higher revolution same as the engine. And when you let the clutch out it all drops.  Double clutching you shift out.  allow the drivetrain to reconnect to the motor and spin at the same speed, and then push the clutch back in and put the transmission in gear at the proper RPM.  When you shift now you should be rev-matching as well as you can.  Double clutching is just more accurate for rev-matching.

I don't think that will help, sorry. Third gear will give me problems just sitting still. It's almost like I'm shifting too fast. but that is weird. I wouldn't think that you could shift too fast. But then, this is my first 5-speed so im in new territory.

Your third gear shouldn't be a problem at all.  If anything your synchro might be shot, or going.

Check out Roger Reynolds.  He seems to have the best handle on trannies.  He has his own shop.  He'll be able to tell you.  He leaves him e-mail in pretty much every post.  Just do a search on him.

Ill give you a quick run down on your tranny,,, Most likly your sincronizer is getting worn,
the sincro looks much like a cone clutch without much surface area and made of brass
,, its job is to do just what its called, sicronizeing the two shafts  to the same speed,
allowing the slider to move into place locking the two shafts by outer splines together
and locking its self in place with spring loaded inner locks to hold it in its gear,
When the slider goes bad the transmission will not as my experience  has been, will no
longer hold itself in gear and it will pop out on you..Also if your sincronizer is worn
proubly the outer splines are worn as they have a special shape in order for the
slider to move over and instead of pointed they become rounded or even
flat and this also will cause your issue,, basicly you need to have it taken down
and inspected most likly to solve your issue and you may spend 600 to 1500
depending on what is found. Alot of the old standard racers would remove
cetain amount of the outer splines for speed shifting and even made claims
they could shift the nicknamed Hemi box without no clutch at all , however
my guess is they spent alot of time picking up parts and peices of the track.., Roger  Reynolds .
