We just picked up a new fish this weekend.  A freshwater Eel.  Wasn't sure if anyone here knew much about eels.  He's pretty cool.  Called a Tire Track Eel.  They of course told us that he'll only get like 12" long... turns out the guy was either wrong about what kind of eel it is or just didn't know how long they really get.  It seems from what I have read on the net that he should get to be about a metre long.  Still cool, but I don't know if we would have gotten it since we'd have to buy a new tank in the future for it.  We stopped by another store and got some blood worms for it and he has come out of hiding.  So anyone an eel expert out there to give me some pointers?  I really don't want to kill him.  LOL.  Thanks.

I never really found home aquariums all that interesting, I actually thought they were dumb.  Until I guy I worked with showed me his.  I didn't realize they got that complex.  It's like a little fricking city.  Once I have the money and the time I might get into it.  Now I appreciate even the smallest aquariums.  You should post pics of your set up.

Unfortunately all the fish now in the big tank are hiders..lol.  The eel is cool as he'll just dive into the gravel and the Leporinus hides under the large rocks.  We had to buy another tank as the  Leporinus kept eating all the smaller fish and that's why there are only 3 in the big tank right now.  I'll see if I can find some pics of the eel and  Leporinus from the web.  The 3rd is just an algae eater so he's not as interesting...lol  We're just starting out, so I am a bit parionold that I'll kill them off...lol.

Again, not my pictures.. but

Black-Banded Leporinus:

And the much cooler Tire Track Eel:

The one above is 12" long and the one we have must be around 4-5" and is a darker color.  From what I've read so far they can be friendly and you can teach them to eat out of your hand.  I just wasn't sure if anyone knew about them so I could take better care of him since he's pretty cool.

I think your onto something with the Loch Ness.  I think we've solved it...lol.  Nessie is an eel.  I know ours can hide out in the gravel and you would never know he was in there until he wanted you to.

Tig- eels are supposed to be extremely friendly and curious from what I've been reading as well as very smart.  They almost sound like having a pet in your tank as they have followed their owners around and you can pet them and feed them from your hand.  See the piranhas seem scary to me.. I wouldn't want to get my finger bitten off or something cleaning the tank...lol.  Tho my Aunt and Uncle swam with them when they were on one of their vacations and they don't have any bite marks on them..lol.  So do you have 3 tanks of piranhas or do you have other guys as well?

the piranhas are actually very timid and shy. at least the red belly ones we have are. i've heard the black ones are pretty mean though. ours run away when you put your hand in the tank, but i'm still scared to do it! lol!!! check out the site we visit for info often, it may help with your eel. http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com

we actually have lots of fish. 3 main tanks and my kids each have a tank as well. our 3 main tanks are 1 55 gallon for the 3 large (about 4.5 - 5") red belly piranhas and 1 red belly pacu (looks almost identical to the piranhas and is in the same family, but doesn't have teeth and is the same size or bigger than my large p's), 1 55 gallon i have setup for my fancy goldfish (got lots of really pretty fantails and various other goldfish with a japanese dojo fish, a couple of frogs, and a pleco and algae eater. the last tank i've just set up and begun cycling it for sea horses (only a 30 gallon). it has 1 chocolatechip starfish, 2 electric blue damsels, and a bunch of live rock with little hitch-hikers in it. as soon as its finished its cycling process, i'll be adding about 3 or 4 sea horses and maybe another fish or 2.

my kiddos have their own tanks in their rooms. one has a huge 55 gallon with a red-eared slider and a mississippi map turtle in it and a goldfish that was supposed to be food for the turtles, but they couldn't catch it and it grew humongous so she named it and has it for a pet as well. my other daughter just has a 3 gallon filtered beta tank with a male and female beta in it.

Once we stop moving we'd love to get a salt water tank.  I love the sea horses.. they are sooo cool.  You have lots of different types of fish...lol.  I can't wait til we can get a huge tank.  I was actually looking around that monster fish keepers the other day.  I love the guys 50,000 gallon tank.  While I don't think we'll ever have that large of a tank.. it does give you some ideas...LOL.
