Hey guys I have a 97 eagle talon with 2.0. I know this is for avenger and sebrings but seeing as I have the same engine I thought you may be able to help. My power steering belt keeps coming off. Its routed right and the pulleyes appear to be free moving. I dont see any obvious damage to the pulleys. Any clue or help would be appreciated.

How much play is in the belt? I would recommend tightening the tensioner.

Yea I thought that too so I tightened her up some more the last time. Ive got another one on and today it stayed on. I did notice that the crank pulley seems to stick out about 1/8 to 1/4" further than the rest off the pulleys. Are they not all suppose to lign up with each other? If not this may be why its coming off.

Yes they should all line up. If your crankshaft dampener is off you may want to get that push in properly. You can do it yourself by keeping the crank stationary and tighten the bolt on the crankshaft.

I tried to do it some but wasnt sure if I would damage the casting behind the pulley by putting something in there to stop it from moving. Is that ok or is there a trick? I pulled the bolt out once and it appeared to be bottoming out at least it was worn pretty good at its end. I added a spacer to see if that would help. How much torque do I need to apply I dont want to push it too much and break or strip the bolt. Thanks for your help by the way.

You just have to keep looking at the space between the block and the dampener. There shouldn't be any. Once it's tight you can stop. I'm guess that's the problem since it's the one that seems out of place. But if you break that bolt off it'll be a BIG pain. I used a pry bar and wedged it in on the block, it held fine. Though I don't guarentee anything.

How much torque do I need to apply I dont want to push it too much and break or strip the bolt. Crankshaft damper bolt for the 2.0 DOHC engines- 105 ft. lbs.

No go wont go in any further. Im in the process of taking it out. Thats a pain in its self. I got a puller but that sucker is barely movin. Ive got it just about up to the frame. I have to take out the motor mount. I assume the one in the front? Do I just need to pull the mount off the frame? Ive got a block of wood and jack under oil pan somewhat supporting the motor for now. Will this work or do I need to hook a hoist up to the motor? I have one but my father in law has it right now. Figure if it doesnt need much lift the block would work. After I get this thing off Im going to get a new one. Any suggestions on that? Thaks for your help fellas

As long as you have the engine supported by the wood on the oil pan (make sure it's not resting on the filter) you can take off the passenger side motor mount. That'll allow you to lower the car enough to get the PITA off. As for pulleys I guess hit up eBay they have all kinds of underdrive pulleys.

Ok Im stupid. Darn thing nearly bit me!! Any who new prob. Motor down as far as it will let me. Im using the pulley grabber and have the damper bolt as loose as it can be. The pulley is bottoming out on the bolt and I cant pull it the rest of the way!! What do i do? Im this close!!!

Get a longer bolt? I didn't have that problem so I find it wierd that you can't get it off.

I know what you mean. I dont know what the heck is going on with this. This is my first on a front wheel drive but I have done plenty on rear wheel drives. I dont think the pulley was put on right. Dont these things have some form of key or something where it is suppose to only go on if lined up? This thing was obviously beat on pretty good. I just hope that if I get the darn thing off it didnt mess anything else up. Im going tomorrow and see if I can find alonger bolt.

Which side has the larger (in diameter) wheel? Closest to the engine or furthest? I'm wondering if they put in on backwards. Wouldn't be the first time I've heard of that.

Larger wheel is closest to the block. I dont know what they did. They beat that thing on though. If I am bottoming out the bolt does that mean I am at least close to pulling this thing off? I think part of the problem is the last 1/4 of threading is worn down so much that when I attach the pullers the pressing bolt pushes the damper bolt in becasue the threads are so worn. Isn there a key way slot or something on these things where you can only put it in one way? I know its pressed on but it seems to me there would be somekind of idiot proof slot so you could only put it on one way and this DA didnt think of that and used a sledge hammer to beat it on!! Something so simple cause so much greif. Having a hard time finding a longer bolt that will fit as well. I assume it is metric. Didnt really find one that would fit at Lowes but if anyone knows the exact size of that bolt it would help a great deal.
