Timing Belt Write up?
« on: March 12, 2006, 11:35:05 PM »

Hello there!

Does anyone know of a timing belt R&R for a 99' v6 Avenger? I just bought one with 102k on it and I need to replace that belt.

Thanks!

Hey George

Recommended change for the belt is 60000, I just bought my 97 Venge a month ago with 123000 and am getting ready to do mine here shortly because I don't know when and if it ever was done....a few tips:

My dealer here in town quoted me 850.00 to do it (not including parts only labor) gawwwd!!!!
If you are very mechanically inclined you can do it yourself for a fraction of the cost but be forewarned your not changing a fanbelt on an old dodge dart....this job will be somewhat involved and requires precise alignment of cam sprockets and crank sprocket.
If you elect to do it yourself.....PUT A NEW WATERPUMP IN AT THE SAME TIME!!!!!!!..........don't cheap out on this one or you will regret it later on down the road.
Rockauto.com has pretty good prices on alot of parts for our cars check them out
Make sure you keep the new belt clean and oil free as oil will tear up a new belt in no time
If you don't have a good service manual (i.e. dealer service manual) do a search on Ebay and buy the 2 book set...about 50-70 bucks give or take, it has all the info you need that the dealer uses to service your car (don't try asking the dealer to sell you one he'll laugh you out the front door) and the generic Haynes manuals are good for toilet paper at best.
Hope this helps!!!...good luck

P.S. Mom says why don't that boy write no more???....hehehe Cheesy Grin

Well howdy there Jeff! Small world, eh?? Where are you from anyhow? I don't see a lot of 'us' south of the Canadian border. In the Denver metro area here, there are FIVE of us in the phone book; And 3 of them are me or family members! HAHA  One of the other 2 ironically lives 3 houses down from me (she called me in utter shock wondering if we were somehow related). ... the 5th Trudeau goes to my church!!! Denver certainly isn't THAT small....

I like to believe I am rather mechanically inclined. I've done my fair share of timing belts... amongst MANY MANY other things. I just did a motor swap on my 02' Hyundai, because my timing belt went out at 71k miles.... ironically. That was good times. I've never actually seen a belt go that early. This will be my 1st time with a transversely mounted V6 though. I did a OHC V6 Tbelt in my old 95' Pathfinder... that was a royal b***h. I am not looking real forward to this one. I was mostly looking for a write up, because these msg forums are a pleathora of knowledge and information. Every repair job on any car, has those couple snags in it that has you thinking 'If I had only known before!'. That is when these write ups come in handy; It's good to see advice and knowlege 1st hand from people who have *actually* done it.... not written by some tech writer who took notes one day ofver the shoulder of factory workers assembling cars Wink Why re-invent the wheel? Might as well see the job through someone who did it 1st hand!

Anyhow, thanks for the advice!! I appreciate it!! Tell mom, "The new jobs a hassle and the kigs have the flu..."

When you replace the water pump, be sure to use a water soluble lubricant on the o-ring for the crossover water tube that goes into the back of the pump.   Lube the o-ring then slide it on the water pipe, and leave it really close to the edge, then press the water pump on over it till it is flush and then bolt it down.   I didn't do it this way and I cut the gasket and had to do the job all over again the next day, after finding just the right sized o-ring, cause I couldnt get a new one from the part store.
And for the timing belt, make sure to mark the belt and pullies with white out or something that wont come off easy, then transfer the markings to the new belt being sure not to skip any teeth when marking, and see if you can find and barrow a dual cam sprocket locking device, it will keep the cams from spinning on you and throwing everything off.

I had a garage and it still sucked.  I need to get the camlock.  That'll make life easier.
