Struts & Timing belt replacement
« on: March 11, 2006, 08:27:44 PM »

Hey everyone!

I just bought a 1999 Dodge Avenger with 102k miles and the 2.5L v6. I need to replace all 4 struts and the timing belt.

Does anyone know of some good techincal write-ups on strut replacement and timing belt replacement on this car?

THANKS!  Roll Eyes

Don't support your car with a sizzors jack when changing your Struts like those pictures in the link, use jack stands.
Don't use cinder blocks, as they WILL crack!  Shocked

Cinder blocks? Are you serioius? People actually do that? Hahaha....

Yeah, I actually put the whole car on jackstands to do this. It was relatively easy, but the car beat the crap outta me since the bolts were all so tight. I only have basic handtools, so I was a little sore the next day  Wink  The whole project took about 3.5 hours. Smiley  What takes the longest is actually compressing and releasing the springs. That took a while, using only a 15/16 wrench.

Use a spring compressor on each side of the spring then go back and forth with a socket (tiring) or impact wrench a few turns each time. Goes real damn fast with impact.

Yeah, I actually did this about 5 weeks ago. It took me about 5 hours, mostly because my ratchet broke and I had to use a 19mm wrench for the compressor!!!

The timing belt is somewhat difficult. You'll need a special tool to hold the tensioner. I found mine online. The procedure should be in the repair manual if I remember. Good luck. Remember it's an interference type engine so be careful.

Yeah it did suck. I got it done about 3 weeks ago. I didn't need any special tools though.... simply used a tiny hex wrench to keep the tensioner retracted.
