Removing Aftermarket Tint
« on: March 03, 2006, 02:36:41 AM »

When I bought my '00 Avenger it came with this junk purple tint, that was ripped in the back where the defroster lines are.. Now I went around to get some pricings on getting it re-tinted professionaly and not using that crap Advance Auto or Auto Zone tint, and they want 120 to peel it off, then antoher 220 for 20% tint all the way around..
My question is, one of the places told me that when you scrape off thewindow tint in the back, that it'll end up breaking the defroster lines in the car. So he basically told me if I had a decent insurance deductable to break my back window, then to get a new back window and they'd tint it..
Can't I use something such as windex to help me peel most of that off, then use something like goo gone on the windows with a rag to get the rest of that adhesive glue off m windows? Is it possible to use a heat gun as well, and pull it off or spray something as well with that heat gun to keep pulling it off??

If anyone knows anything about this, i'd greatly appreciate it..

The tint guy is right.  The rear is a whore.  As for other windows, get some "Goop Off" "Goof Off" "Goo Gone" or a gasket remover, and a razor scraper.  Then rub done an area, and then scrape.  Do that all over the thing.  You'll get sick/high so make sure you poke your head out and take a few breaths of air.  But you'll lose your rear windor defroster if you try and remove the tint back there by yourself.  I don't know if I'd bust my rear window just to get it tinted though.  I'd find a shop that will remove it and guarentee that they won't ruin your defroster.

So basically there is no way I can remove my rear tint by myself by peeling it off, using a heat gun or doing it carefully??

One tint place told me they can get the rear tint off for me, without a problem, and that it'd take awhile to do so.. But they could get it off without scraping off my defroster lines.. But its not cheap what they want for it, so I was trying to see if I could do it myself..

I'm not a tint pro.  I've done some removal on a few different cars, but I've never messed with the back because it's one of those things that I don't want to screw up.

Hrmm i've heard mixed reviews on removing the tint in the rear.. I been lookin for someone whos done it to help me out about some of it, but so far nothing yet.. I was told a few different things.. One that I could get it off with a heat gun, and scraping, and two, that the defrosters shouldn't be pulled off because they are IN the window.. Then I have had people tell me i'll scrape the defrosters off, or pull them off as well.. So im not sure yet lol!!

Well you can run your fingers on the back window and feel the defroster lines.  I know they can be affected because I screwed mine up on one of my old cars.  They might be different on different cars, but I'm 95% sure on ours they're on the glass.  Any scraping would screw it up.  A heat gun might work though.

A guy on ASEC posted this up about it, not sure how accurate it is, but hopefully its pretty accurate...

Ok  Ok  I use to tint windows...  Get something with alot of ammonia and a THIN Black trash bag.  Cut the bag so it is the Long ways and will cover the whole window.  Now.... Soak the Hell outta the inside back window... Now lay the trash bag over the glass as if it were a sticker... As little air bubbles as possible.  If your gagging from the smell your doing this right...LOL  Now tuck it under the trm and headliner so it doesnt fall off.... If its hot and sunny outside let it sit in the sun for a while with the car running and heat on full blast.  If its not sunny, oh well, just use the heat.  MOST of the tint should come off.  The tint that turns purple is VERY easy to peel off.  If you get most of it off, use the same ammonia based product and soak window again and use a 0000 brillo pad and begin rubbing back window, not only will this remove the glue, but you can Feel anything that may still be stuck on there.  It will also shine up your defrost lines and they will work faster!  If the car just cant get the back window hot enough then try the Steamer method, that works too!  What I would do is get some heat proof gloves or pliers and hold steam on there and gab tint at same time.  If you have ANY other questions feel free to ask!  While your "bagging" the back window start doing the side windows!  Oh, and tell them to be very careful around the front windows near the Mirror triangle.  The first time I tinted mine I didnt get it sitting right and after a week of not rolling windows down, I rolled my drivers side down and Riiiiipppp.  I tore it!  I hope this helps!

I don't know about the ammonia heat method but when I had mine done the guy used a steamer to pull all the old tint off.  I would think you would have to live with that ammonia smell for a long time if you did that and that wouldn't be cool.  I would try the steamer method.

ok and now I just found a site that tells you how to do it so umm here.

http://www.tintdude.com/remove.html

I guess the ammonia was the right way.
Hope this helps.

I can tell you that tint remover and a razor blade is NOT the way to do it.

I'm tempted to bribe a neighbor to find where the army has stored my car and throw a rock through the rear window.  - New rear window!

So it looks like the best way to go is to use the ammonia method on the rear window. My main worry is just that defroster piece, I don't wanna pull it off or damage it any.. But im sure with the ammonia eating at the tint it should come off pretty well..

Actually, I was cleaning the interior of my car today and when I was cleaning the rear, I decided to pull on a piece.. I ripped a pretty decent piece off without really trying to do anything. It may take an hour or two, but I definately think I can get it off.. The ammonia method mention should make it come off pretty easily.. Im gonna try it soon most likely. I think just the ammonia getting it wet and letting it soak will help me get it off.. Im gonna start on a top corner with just a bit and try it, and see what its gonna be like. If i can get it off easily, then im gonna do the rest of the window.. If not ill try something else lol. But from what I see, it'll come off pretty easily.. I'll get some white scotchbrite, and some of that 3m adhesive remover or that simple green stuff and remove whatever craps left behind.. Then it should be ready for new tint!
