Breaking in Brake Pads
« on: March 01, 2006, 05:32:23 AM »

I've read not to slam on your brakes or ride them too long for the first 500 miles or so.
Is the first few hundred miles on your pads that crucial?

I'm on my brakes VERY hard every day.  At least once a week I slam on the brakes at over a hundred mph. I don't care how fast the pads wear out, how hard it is on the rotors or calipers or the tires... I just need them to work very well.

If my pads now are "glazed" over, what can I do about it?  Would light sanding bring them back to life?

i don't think a break in time is that crucial for most pads, as long as you don't glaze them over right away.
maybe you should invest in a brake upgrade.

I tried to lightly sand my glazed-over pads and rotors before, and I did notice a difference in stopping power.

Yeah thats my question too lol

I slammed my breaks at 40 mph and now they suck ass.. But thats cuz the Dealership ripped me off when they did my inspection and stated "your pads are bad" and then said i needed to change them.. What other choice did I have? They woulda failed my inspection, I woulda needed to turn my rotors, and get new pads, install them, then spend another 50 on an inspection/emissions..Oh well.. Thats why im takin the car back down there and they are fixing it and I don't care what they think or have to say.. Never trust anyone to do anything for you.. They can't even do a good job Sad

I hope they tell me I have a bad caliper or something so I can make them replace it for missing it on the inspection.. Frickin ying yangs :-x

When you get a new set of pads, don't use them hard, I recommend this.. When I use mine hard, they end up being excrement, bcuz they wear funny.. Atleast this is just from personal experiences with other cars..

I wait til the last second to hit the brakes before entering a curve.  If you don't hear from me on here for a week or so, its probably because I waited a second too long.

That's a good way to die or get into a serious accident, I hope you are kidding or you work on a race track.

and yes, you are supposed to be easy on the brakes otherwise you can get serious glazing. I know, I've had it happen to me. Cheap stock rotors. and there was slight glaze on my powerstops slotted, but took much much longer to form.

ease up man.
