Funny Smell?
« on: February 26, 2006, 05:23:08 AM »

Ok tonight i hooked up my amp and subs and got them all perfect as i would consider at least but now i am smelling this awful smell whenever i open up my trunk.......i checked all the wires and none of them are hot.....it kinda smells like something burning but i couldnt tell you what.....the only thing i can think of is maybe grounding? i grounded my amp to where the origional infinity amp is ground at....seemed to be the perfect location......i was thinking tho maybe i could be getting something coming back through either of the lines maybe its the infinity amp or maybe just the paint buring off where the ground is hooked on....i'm not sure anyone have any suggestions? maybe different grounding locations?....i checked everywhere and the smell is only coming from the trunk.....i was thinking about unhooking the infinity amp anyways b/c eventually i want to replace the stock front speakers......is there an adapter that someone makes so i can unhook the harness and not have to splice all the wires back together on that? that would be very helpful.....but any suggestions on the smell would be great too.

Your subs could be taking a crap.  You'll get a bad smell when the subs start to go out.  Even if they are brand new.  If they are hooked up or powered wrong you'll wreck them.  Pull the sub out of the box and smell the back of it.  That'll give you a good idea of what it is.

The other options:

Bad Amp (or something internal in the amp)  internal capicitors, mosfets, power supply, or bad connection

When wired it it may be wired below yours amps stable ohms rating..

Power wire may be to (8 ga, 4 ga, 2 ga, 0 ga, 00 ga small per amps current draw ...

Improperly fused

The list could go on and on ... any more detailed information related to your system before and after upgrade?

ok well the smell went away and i shoulda just left it alone......now i unhooked it today to mount my amp to my box and i also took the subs outta the box because the previous owner was a moron and stripped the crap outt athe holes so the subs were real loose and i repositioned them and whatever but i noticed then the previous owner was even more a retard when he hooked up the dual 4 ohm voice coils only up half way ( he only had the leads hooked up to one voice coil Shocked ) so i hooked that back up in parallel and then hooked it all back up......now i am blowing the fuses on my amp left and right when i turn it up to loud......i was jsut wondering its a 620 watt amp i am running it bridged and it has 2 20 amp fuses on the amp ( came in it)  i was jsut wondering bigger fuses or is there a way that i am hooking it up wrong maybe? i looked it up and my amp is 2 ohm stable and i am runnign 2 ohm so it shoudlnt be a problem.....any ideas about the fuses?

Maybe your subs are sucking too much juice and it's causing your fuses to blow, and that's why the other guy had only one coil hooked up.  That's my guess.

hmmm.......
you've got them wired @ 2ohms, and ur amp is supposed to be 2 ohm stable...
do u hae the gain on the amp turned ALL THE WAY UP? that could play into it...
does it ever go into 'protect' mode at all? if so, just try turning the gain down slightly, it may help...
and what kinda amp is it? what's the model number?
