Please Advise! Lost a lot of coolant!
« on: February 25, 2006, 04:06:11 PM »

I woke up this morning and there was a trail of antifreeze coming from the side of the motor where the belts are. I'm betting my water pump took a dump. Cry  The trail went from there and leaked all the way down to the back tires. Shocked The overflow bottle is almost totally empty.  Thing is I won't be able to give up the car for a few days.  Think it's ok if I just fill it with water for the next day or two until I can get it in a shop?

It's cold out man.  I don't know if I'd chance it.  It's still cold up here man, you don't want to put water in there and have it freeze.  You'll over heat!  Not to mention if the ice expands, you'll have to replace all your hoses and crap.  I'd pour water in it, let the car run, and see if you can find where it's spraying out.  Hopefully it's just a hose near the water pump.  But if it's the water pump that's crappy.  But when it comes to actually driving it around, I'd stick with antifreeze.

I was right. It was the water pump. I tell ya' I HAVE to learn to do some of this stuff on my own cuz they absolutley assulted my wallet to the tune of $827.65

My friend who's building up his Camaro laughed and told me he could have probably done it in 3-4 hours and only for the cost of the parts.

Crap, they're raping you on that.  I can't believe they had the balls to charge you that much.  Timing is really the only thing that would've been a pain.  You could've boosted your car for that!

$850 for boost? Not in the 6 cyl unless someone here wants to sell me their used kit. *anyone? Anyhow, I'm the 3rd owner of this car and appearantly the first to actually take care of it so I'm thinking of saving my lunch money for a 3.0 and ERT Trans. But on my salary and with expensive repairs like this one, it's gonna be a while.

And get this. Now my pwr. steering pump is really loud. Could it just be because of the new belts??? Sounds like it's being overdriven.

How's the fluid in it?  I'd take it back in and have them look at it.  Tell them that it didn't do it before, and it's doing it now.

Damn, it sounds like you are going to that dealership I used to go to! Each time they would look at an issue, more would pop up later in the month. Five Star rated my ass!

NO FU*KING WAY!!!!!! I was driving back from school tonite and turned the radio off to listen for that whine. It's really noticable in the 600-1,000 rpm range and gets louder with rpms especially when there's that little blip from the 2-1 downshift when stoping for a light. But I hear it faintly when crusing too.

AND there's a skritchy buzzy noise coming from the belt area. It must be a belt rub but I've never heard one like this. If anyone knows of Incubus's new cd the sound you hear at the very begining of the first song, "manglomaniac" it sounds exactly like that  Roll Eyes If you don't know that song, download it just to hear that noise. Maybe it's a loose bolt too?

AND either I'm going insane or my exhaust now sounds different. More of a blah low tone like this one kid's p.o.s. Cutlass I see that has a performance muffler on it. Is it even possible that they did something that would change the exhaust note?!?! If the timing was off I'd be throwing a cel so it can't be that.

I'm furious, and have homework up to my arse, and I'm sooo ready to break right now! I'm gonna have to find time to take it back in and insist that a mechanic ride along with me even tho they told me they don't like to do that for liability reasons Angry Angry Angry

Ideas anyone? Please ask others too. I need some assistance! Cry

It's the mechanics fault.  The exhaust would be stretch for that to be making a new noise, unless they hit something when putting it on a lift or if they pulled the engine and didn't put the gasket back in for the exhaust manifold.  I'd take it to another mechanic and tell them the deal.  Ask them to look at it, and get a second opinion.  Take it back to the first shop tell them what you've heard and MAKE THEM fix it.  If they fornicate around, report them to better business bureau.

Well I drove around today with the window down (dispite the cold) the new exhaust note does sound like a leak in the system somewhere. The hard part is finding it. Undecided IMO it doesn't sound that awful tho. Kinda like if you've heard a hopped up disel  Cheesy but that's not what I paid for.

I think I'm gonna call that shop back and tell them about the problems I've been having after their repair job. If they say they'll look at it then I'll see what they have to say about them covering the cost saying as these problems occured only after I went to their shop. They'll probably say something like they can't be sure it was their fault thus I'm still responsible for the cost. If that happens I'll go to another mechanic but I'll still have to pay for the repairs then! Angry
