Clunking from the front?
« on: February 23, 2006, 09:43:24 PM »

Hi, I bought a 98 L4 ES avenger recently.  There are some clunking noise under the hood when I drive it in town at about ~ 20 mph.  Sounds like some ball joints.  But when I drive it faster, higher than 30-40 mph, no clunks at at even on some rough roads.

Any suggestions to find the culprit?  Thanks!

Also, at about 65 mph, there is some vibration from the steering wheel.  The car goes straight at any speed.  Could the tie-rod ends be bad?

Thanks in advance!

Balljoint recall.  Check with a dealership near you to see if they were replaced.  I had problems with my sway bar link and that did the same thing.  Take it to a local shop, most places around here check the problem for free.  Then do it yourself, or have them do it.

Mod List.  Um WAY too many to fit on here.  But the engine can handle about 800HP

Thanks!  Called my local dealer, the balljoint recall was done in 2001.

Jacked up the car yesterday, found the inner tie rod is loose, the passenger front wheel moves left and right.
Couldn't find repair info from Autozone.com, no haynes manual yet.

Do I need to remove a crossmember (subframe) when trying to remove/install the tie-rod boot?

How difficult is this job?  I've replaced the tie-rods on a ford before.

Any suggestions are welcome!

I haven't done the tie rod on our cars yet but I think you just pop it out of the hub assembly and then unscrew it.  You just hold the steering shaft in place and twist the tie rod.  This is something I'd think about taking to a shop, just because when you put it back in, you're looking at messing with your steering and alignment.  The tie rod (from what I can tell) is a half hour job.  So the shop won't kill you on labor.  I'd at least take it in and ask them what they think and how much.
