95 avenger limp mode
« on: February 11, 2006, 07:11:21 PM »

I'm trying to help my daughter with her 95 dodge avenger but I'm not much on transmissions. It seems to drive fine for about the first 20 minutes but then the transmission goes into "limp mode" (that's what I've been told its called). It then stays in second gear until I let it cool down and disconnect and reconnect the battery. It feels strong (doesn't slip) and shifts fine until this point, so I get the feeling it may just be a sensor. Any guidance would help.

The last dodge I took into the shop ended up costing me 1800.00 in trany work and I'm hoping to avoid that if I can.

Do a tranny flush.  That would be the first step.  When was the last time you did one on the car?

Mod List.  Um WAY too many to fit on here.  But the engine can handle about 800HP

The transmission pan seal was leaking a little, so I had the fluid and filter changed but not a "flush". This was done about 2 months prior to the limp mode problem.

I'd take it in and have a full flush done on it.  That'll be the cheapest fix.  It might end up being the input or output sensor.  I don't have the A604, so I don't have a lot of experience with it.  But that's where I'd start.

Where did you get it flushed? More than likely they put dexron type tranny fluid in it, which may cause the limp mode... If that is the case, get it flushed ASAP..... I would suggest buy Mopar atf+3 at a dealership and take it to a shop and request a flush with your own fluid, thats what i always do to make sure im getting the correct fluid every time. Could also be a sensor, any good reputable transmission shop should be able to diagnose a limp mode error, and tell you what would be needed to be fixed... Good luck, i too have a 95 and they are prone to more issues due to outdated materials (solenoid packs, valve bodies, etc.) which were all upgraded in 96, and then 98 i believe.

One item that you always want too keep in mind is their are two types of 604 transmissions,
those that are bad and those that will go bad, you transmission going into fail safe comes
from 3 basic possibilities,, Input or output sensor failure, gear ratio error from clutch slippage,
or converter slippage in  abbility to lk up...solinoid pk failure,,, Since your faceing  a warm
up failsafe instead of cold  failsafe I would suggest getting the input and out put sensor
changed as the are often bad at every 60 thousand and get these at  Dodge not Auto
zone..Provideing your not haveing a internal clutc h  or mechanical failure often Solinoid
packs will fail to connect after the unit is up to operateing temp however it usually takes
much longer than 20 minutes to fully warm up but depending on why the solinoid pak
is loseing it ability to connect,,, solinid s work off a magntic feild  when energized for reasons
Im not going to explain , heat will render them unable to work , Another  possibility  is
you have a clutch pk failing and the cold  oil is able to work and  appply that cluch and
leaks  to much when it warms...I doubt the dextron oil is a big issue,, My shop has built
hundreds of 604 s and often used dextron  2 with zero combacks. I say a good rebuild
trumps the oil..If you can find a  honest transmission shop have you codes cked , let me
know what they are and iIll try let you know RREYNOLD@NENONET.COM
