Hey all. So I'm driving home in the hot Texas heat in my '99 Sebring 2.5L yesterday and I notice the accelerator starts getting harder to push. Very quickly it gets worse to the point where the pedal will barely move and pretty much gets stuck. No check engine light, but I glance over at the Temp gauge and it's pegged on H. I didn't really have a choice so I pulled it into a parking lot and killed the engine hoping to cool it down. No fluid leaks were visible and she cooled down to Normal pretty quick.
I tried to start it up and now all I get is the rapid tick, tick, tick you get when your battery is near dead. But louder. The accelerator has loosened up quite a bit. I didn't get a chance to check the coolant level / color yet since my rescuer picked me up and couldn't wait for it to cool but I'll be heading back over to it soon.
the pedal was probably caused by metals heating and expanding at differnt rates, i.e. the rod the butterfly is bolted to expands faster than the TB housing, reducing tolerances to 0
the clicking is the solenoid trying to do its job, the reason its louder is because you actually have enought juice to run it....no clicky would mean the 'noid was toast-- you probably toasted your starter, it happens alot on V engines due to space constriants and routing the exaust too close to the starter, especially if you have aftermarket headers, etc.
bring along a piece of wood and a hammer, if its still clicking, place the piece of wood on the starter then hit the block of wood(lightly at first) with the hammer and see if it frees it up, have a buddy try to start the car in between hits, if it doesnt work after 2-3 tries, hit it a bit harder once or twice, DO NOT go all out on it, you just want to shock the starter to get it to free up or move out of a dead spot, not dent it
I did this with my starter, the hammer trick that is. Car wouldn't start so I had someone try to start it as I tapped the starter with the hammer. Fired right up. Ended up replacing the starter though. It's neat what little tricks works wonders on cars.
yeah, i probably should have mentioned, that if you NEED to do the hammer trick, ussually a new starter will be on the list pretty soon
Yeah that's what I presumed, lol. Well the trick didn't work anyway So I'm gonna tow it to the house tomorrow and just replace the starter and go from there.
Put the car in neutral, remove the spark plugs, or at least the front three and try to crank the engine by hand. Get a big ass breaker bar and start turning the engine. If you can't turn it by hand, it's really bad news.

ok, time for final update, but I doubt it will be of use to anyone with similar circumstances...very odd. Starter was fine. Turned out to be a simple ground issue. Not enough power was getting to the starter. Not sure how the overheat affected it, but certainly relieved it was a simple fix

lol, thats good to hear, maybe the heat was the final straw on a already weak connection, copper is a soft metal
