I'd recommend getting a new headunit (CD Player) for the car.  But if you want to do it with the stock set up you can.  What kind of amp and sub do you have?  Do you have the model number?  That will make it easier to look up the specs if you don't have them.  You will need to get an amp installation kit from pretty much any car audio place.  If you have no installation experience it might be a good idea to find someone in your area that can help you with it.  But if you want to do it yourself that's up to you.  Just post up the stuff you have, or the stuff you're thinking about getting.

I've already replaced the head unit, with a kenwood, mp3 compatable cd player, and i've changed out the back and door speakers, put can't figure out how to get the dash off without damaging it, to replace the tiny ones. I haven't bought any amp or subwoofer yet, i was thinking of staying with the brand i replaced the stock with, sony xploids.

the ones in the door were a pain, they were too small i couldn't figure out how to mount them to screw all 4 screws back in, so they are only in there with one, but its held up good so far.

Might want to find a way to get them in there with mroe than one screw you can cut the plastic pretty easily and make a mount out of it.  Also the tweeters, just pop out.  You don't have to take the dash off at all.

Find out a good enclosure for your sub.  The sub should have a specs sheet that will tell you what kind of box to get/make.  For the best performance if you're getting a single sub, is to get a mono block amplifer.  It will make a difference if you get a dual voice coil or single.  So once you make your decision post it up.

Be sure to always check before you drill anything, or screw into anything to make sure you're not going to wreck anything.

1. Mount sub into sub box, make sure it's not going to slide around in your trunk.  Connect the wires to proper jacks in the box.

2. If you can mount the amp to the box do it.  If not find a good place to mount it.

3. Tape one end of the RCAs and the Remote wire together, to make it easier to run it.  Tape every 8 inches or so.

4. Disconnect the positive battery cable.

5. Remove the radio, and connect the RCAs and remote wire.  Drop them down through the dash, and run them to the passenger kick panel.  Then run them under the carpet back to the rear seat.  Take the seat off and run the RCAs and remote wire to the amp

6.  Find a good grounding point.  You can take a flathead screwdriver and chisel away at the paint on the floor or wall of the car in the trunk.  Then run your ground to it, and use a good screw to hold it in.  Use the little metal ring that they give you, and clamp it around the wire.  Hook your ground wire up.

7. You will have to find a SAFE place to drill a hole in your firewall.  Or if you can find a gromit that will give you access that's even better.  You will have to run your power cable through there.  Run the power cable down the DRIVER side, the same way you did the RCAs on the passenger side.  Run it to the amp.

8. Make sure you have a fuse in the powerwire about 3-6 inches from the battery.  Hook your power leads up, and put the fuse in.

9. Put your radio back in.

10. Enjoy your bass.

thanks, this will be helpfull once i decide what i want, i listen to mainly techno, industrial, ebm.. bands like wumpscut, skinnypuppy, foriegn ebm bands and such.

Anyone have any ideas what brand and or type of woofer would be best suited for this general style of music, the base is more the kind that is there for effect, and to carry the music, as apposed to the rap style that is mainly bass hits. I'm not trying to win competitions or shows or anything, I'm just trying to make my car nice.

If you listen to that type of music, and you want good sound quality, try looking at an Infinity Kappa Perfect 12.1d, in a sealed enclosure. The sub calls for 350 watts rms, but I know it will handle up to 600 watts rms of CLEAN power.  The sub is rated at s/n of 96db, thats pretty good.  MTX's new line of subs are awesome, you would be fine with a MTX T7512-44 in a ported box, it will be loud and pretty responsive if you tune your port correctly.  I built a box for this sub for my shops demo car, tune at 38hz, with a 12 dB gain at 50hz.  it rocked.  The sales person that demoed the sub, loved playing the type of music you listen to.  As for amps, MTX are pretty clean and powerful, for either sub, i'd reccomend a MTX TA3401 mono block.  It's rated at 400 watts rms at 4ohms.
As for you concern about your charging system, see if you can get a Stinger battery, such as an SP800, or SP1000.  that should do fine unless you plan on adding amplifiers, then you might look into extra batteries and an alternator.  Oh 4ga power and groound wire will be needed for the TA3401 amp.  Hope any of this helped.
Also, look into getting a line driver for your amp, I have an Audio Control Matrix. I also know that the Audio Control Epic 160 is pretty good, it acts as a eq for your sub amp, it also measures dB's.
