Help me diagnose this grinding steering noise (VIDEO)
« on: September 27, 2008, 08:37:50 AM »

I included 2 videos. Basically whenever the car is in motion or stand still and the steering wheel is turned it makes this grinding noise.
This noise doesn't always happen.

Also when the steering wheel is pointed straight and I go over a bump it makes the noise but its not as in tense.

first check if you rack and pinion has enought oil in it

next thing I would check are the tie rods and also where the spindles joint with the lower suspension

Where is this rack and pinion located exactly? Is it easy to get too?

I'd just turn my radio up to drown out the noise  Wink

bring the car to a mechanic
because whatever we could explain to you it's obvious you have no clue how a car works

at least he didnt ask "what is a rack and pinion" although that may have been what he meant, i'd like to give him the benifit of the doubt in that he was probably just asking how easy/hard it was to get to on THESE cars.....(god i hope so)

sebastian- if you don't know what the rack and pinion is, i repeat Alain's commnet, go to a mechanic, you're getting into territory of ~if you don't know, don't try~

I know where the rack and pinion is and its function. In the past i've never done any work on it. So is it some compontent that needs lubrication time to time?

This noise only seems to come from the passengers side only, I never heard it from the drivers. Could it possbily be some balljoint?

steering and suspension noises tend to move around alot because everything is connected in one way or another its easy for a noise on the driver side to move to pass side, and vice versa. best advice, get out of the car and have a friend or family member play with the wheel while you pin down the exact location of the noise, once you know WHERE, you can isolate WHAT is making the noise.

Its hard to isolate the noise because the wheel is in the way and I can't get an stethoscope near the steering suspension components. If I take the wheel off the noise will probably go away because the load and weight will be gone.
