front wheel noise
« on: September 18, 2008, 04:20:52 AM »

Well I got a sound clip because we all know it sucks trying to explain what it sounds like.  It is in the front driver’s wheel.  Passenger side - Nothing and the Back - Nothing.

I notice that it is does it once the car has been warmed up and been driven for awhile.  I just went out and checked and it made no noises.  It has not been driven for about an hour. It just started a couple of days ago. I notice it the most when it goes over a bump.  Is there any that could be greased down there?  I could not really find anything, but its dark out and did not put it up on the ramps yet.

I’m going to be putting new struts in after winter.  The ball joints recalls has been done twice already,  So I don’t know if it could be that or not.

lol. it sounds like your tire is quietly trying to have sex.  Cheesy

Have you replaced the upper ball joint ever? [maybe]

It also sounds like it's just the tire rubbing against the rim. have that checked sometime i guess. Did you ever have the hub assembly looked at?

If you have a shop that will look at these things for you for a small fee, i'd do it. It's better to pay a mechanic $20 and be assured that it's NOT a $120 part, than to buy it, put it on, and then still have the squeak. Plus, if he's a smart one, he'll probably be able to tell you EXACTLY where it's coming from.

Damn that was an annoying noise to listen to for 20-30 seconds.  It just sounds like the tire is rubbing against something.  Is there any weird wear on the tire?

Well I checked out the tire and their are no weird wear one them. wear is all even across the tire.   There shouldn't be since it had two wheel alignments since those rims were put on.  The first one it needed to be aligned and the second for the stupid @ss that hit me.

I have never replaced the upper ball joints.  I looked through the hole service log of the car and did not see them.  Its really nice when the previous owner gives you every receipt of repair that was done to the car to you.  lol

I cant really notice it when the car is moving only when their is supension travel.  The only time I notice it is when its warm and been driven you can move the wheel a little and hear it.  When it sits more than an hour its gone.  So I don't know.   I checked everything under the car to make sure their was nothing stupid broken down their and driving on it and breaks.

Could it be the bad strut marking that?  How should I check to see if the hub assembly is bad?

I called  the shop that I only trust bring my car to and he's on vacation tell the end of next week so I will call him if I cant figure it out in the mean time.

yeah............ so I'm going to stop by his shop in the morning and talk to him.   I guess I will see how much the damage is.   I got it narrowed down.  For a fact it is in the front drivers wheel,  it only happen turning left with a load and if you hit a hard bump.  I guess I'll see what the morning brings.  I hope its something simple and not hard to fix.

Front hub assembly.

That or brakes.

I couldn't tell from the picture but it looked like you were rocking the car back and forth to make the noise not turning it or moving the suspension.  This makes it a rotational noise not a travel noise from the suspension.

Well I was going to try to get it into the shop this week but he was open Monday and took rest of the week off.  I'm hoping to get it in next week.  I think their is either two problems.

The one in the clip and the other is a sharp fast click/pop noise when taking off turing left ONLY.  Its only when you takes off fast.

cv joint maybe.

I was doing a little research over on ASEC.  I found a couple topics of what it sounds like and cv joint was one and ball joints.  I don't know but he's back monday so I will stop and see when he can look at the car.

So how hard is the cv joint to replace?  Anyone know how much they run?

sounds like your ball joints are starting to go bad, wheel bearings/tie rod ends could be in the mix.

Well I got it back, and you know how the car has a mind of its own and when it sees a mechanic it never makes that dam noise.  He got it to make that fast/click pop and things it the cv joint starting to show signs of getting worn out.  The noise / squeak would not make it.  He told me just to watch it a little more, because if its only making it sometimes and sometimes not it going to take time to find it.  He told me a couple of signs to watch for.  I was thinking about that squeak, thinking ball joint.  How long should they last?  The ones from the recall don’t even have 30,000 miles on them.
