My 2000 LXi does something strange. Everytime I put gas in the tank, then start the car, it runs like hell. Really rough and almost stalls (and sometimes does). It doesn't matter which grade of gas, or which brand.
Any ideas?
(This post relates to the "stress" post in another catagory )
It only does it when you put new gas in? How long does it take for it to run right? I was going to say you're losing pressure, but then you'd be stuck when you first start any time. Do you run your tank to almost empty before filling up? Try filling at the half mark and see what happens

Mod List. Um WAY too many to fit on here. But the engine can handle about 800HP
I tried filling up at all intervals, and it does the same thing. I never let my car get below 1/4 tank since the gauge isn't all that accurate (Filling at this level only takes 8-10 gallons...math doesnt really work).
The car will just idle rough until I get on the highway or maintain a higher speed for some period of time.
A co-worker suggested buying a new gas cap, since this happened to a car he onced owned. Would this really help? A gas cap leak would generally send a CEL, right?
Yeah I believe you would get an EVAP solenoid circuit ( ) code for that. Are you getting a CEL? Have you had any maintenance done before on it? Just asking that way we can rule out what could be causing your problem.
pop your gas cap off and push the splash flap down, put your cap back on (making sure it clicks) then start your car up. If it is running like it would if you just put gas in, then you have a pressure lose somewhere, and I would start with a new gas cap. If that's not the problem we can do the "process of elimination" method.
Recent maintenance: Currently 64,500 miles on the car
at 61K: Air filter, fuel filter at 59K: Tune up (Water pump, timing belt, plugs, wires) at 54K: Transmission flush
All oil changes are done at 3000 miles. I am not currently getting a CEL for anything. I was thinking the same thing about a pressure loss too, so I might try the gas cap, unless my maintenance record might spark an idea about the problem.
sounds like maybe you have some rust ,dirt,or something in your tank.when you put gas in it stirs it up off the bottom.
I thought the same thing. You could take your car out on an empty road and at slow speed jerk your car from side to side a couple of times to stir up the gas in the tank and see if you can recreate the symptom. Just throwing out ideas, and this one doesn't cost a thing. Did this start after you had your fuel filter replaced? That caught my eye.
Ok, new senerio. Losing pressure from your new fuel filter? Did you get this work done at a Chrysler/Dodge dealer? Do you know if it was a Mopar filter?
I bought the filter from Autozone, so it was not a Mopar. I tried like hell to get the old one loose and couldn't, so I had the Chrysler dealer install the filter I bought.
I have been running dry gas in the tank until near empty for the past 2 fuel stops, and the problem appears to be decreasing...but not cured yet. I will keep you all posted, and thanks for the assistance!

did someone put something in your tank? sugar.. tampons, sand.. other miscellaneous objects?
Is that what that string was? Hell I lit it thinking it was a fuse to some dynamite! But seriously, I have the locking fuel tank, so unless the car was unlocked (and I never leave her unlocked) that would be the only chance for sugar/debris.
Ok I was wrong...I stalled twice on the way home from work today. I stopped by the dealership, argued with the service manager about a diagnostics fee (I have paid enough already).
They scan the car, find a misfire, and nothing else. They even roadtest the car with no problems. The service tech claims that it has to be one of the sensors that controls idling, fuel delivery, ect.
Of course, as I leave, the car almost stalls again .
The dealer wants me to leave the car with them for a day so they can try to re-create the problems and aquire data. Probably will cost over 200 bucks. The other alternative is for me to sell the Sebring. Anyone else have a take on this? I'm getting seriously pissed about the situation.
Well you could also try a new ECU, PSUKev just put one up for sale. Swap it see if it makes a difference. Your injectors could be bad. Also we've been focusing mostly on fuel. It might have something to do with your air intake. I'd pull the intake off, and make sure it's all clean and there's nothing blocking it. But if you're getting misfire, I'd check plugs, injectors, I'd check timing. And finally ECU.
