Starter Problem/Questions for the Pro's or those who might have exp. this..
« on: September 02, 2008, 05:32:20 AM »

Hello Folks:

On sunday wife took her 97 Sebring v6 Coupe to Canadian Tire (local repair shop and auto parts chain....Extremely dodgy and unreliable) while I was away for the weekend of fishing Smiley ! for emissions test.

Mechanic told her that the exhaust was leaking and he could'nt conduct the test for emissions. Instead he offered to give an estimate to fix the muffler and front down pipe (which my significant other without knowing said yes to). After that she drove the car home and parked on the drive way. Few hours later the car would'nt start.

Basically what happens is that when you turn the key over engine does'nt turn and there is no clickin from the starter. Is there anything I can check for here quickly before dishing out few $100 for new starter (and perhaps only to find that it is'nt the starter). The reason I feel that the starter might be ok and it might the mechanic who looked into the car few hours back (especially since the starter is around the downpipe area).

How hard is it to change the starter? I searched and did'nt really find any DIY's on it and to top it all off I can't find my Chilton's manual at the moment.

I would really appreciate if anyone could provide guidance to get the car going.

Thanks everyone.

You can look at the starter and make sure everything is connected.  If there is no click from the starter it's because the starter has no power or is completely dead.  I'd bet on a loose connection causing lack of power.

Mod List.  Um WAY too many to fit on here.  But the engine can handle about 800HP

Hey Guys:

I did'nt have enough time to tackle this myself and then I had to go overseas for work. I returned back and my wife went to some shady mechanic (on referral of someone @ work).

They fixed the starter problem and said that the OE remote starter was the culprit and had to disable that as it was all melted out.

Costed about 300$ and got a really bad job done to the car. Wires were cut and now the blower motor won't work. Fuse box cover on the drivers side is missing.

Overall an experience I never wish on anyone Sad.
