Vehicle is dying while idling/driving
« on: August 08, 2008, 08:51:59 PM »

2000 V6 Avenger - 78,000 miles on it.

The problem has been getting worse.  Over the last 3 years the vehicle would die while driving about once every 3 months.  The check engine light would come on.  I'd pull over and fire it up and not have another problem for another 3 months.  Now the problem is happening every other day, however I do not get the check engine light anymore.  Sometimes it will die at a stoplight.  Sometimes while driving the RPM's drop to ZERO..  then pick up quickly because I have it on cruise causing a jerk reaction while driving.

Any ideas where to begin.  I have not yet changed the plugs or wires, but was on my to-do list this summer.

Thanks for the help

Even though your CEL isn't on anymore I would take it in and get it scanned.  Sounds like a sensor problem.

Mod List.  Um WAY too many to fit on here.  But the engine can handle about 800HP

Is your CEL burned out?  Check that it lights up for a second or two when you first turn the key to the run position.  (Not like that solves the larger issue, but hey, at least you'll know...)

Having the same problem on my 98. Doesnt always die, rev drop, then spike. Sometimes it will try to over compensate (under or over rev and hold, idle up to 2000) for a minute or so after. The light has only stayed on long enough to get a reading once, it was a MAP sensor error. Changed that and still having the problem.

I'd seafoam the intake might be a dirty IAC ...

Ok noob question but, what is the best way to go about seafoaming the intake? I heard the best way is to drop it in a major vacuum line, but I dont see one that goes through the throttle body. Should i just funnel it in to the square hole in bottom of the throttle body air intake. I also need some diagrams of the 6G73 engine, I have the 6G72 rebuild manual, and none of it looks the same as mine. The throttle body looks like the Montero and truck? And the Plenums dont match either...

I have the same problems described in Q/P forum. Also with alot of CEL warnings.

I actually don't know how to effectively put seafoam into the intake either.  Huh  Anyone want to elaborate on this?

first things first, take it to auto zone and get it scanned...... after that go from what the readings are....... sounds to me like a o2 sensor tho. cuz i went threw the same thing.

I had my IAC off, and figure if it was bad then it wouldn't idle at all, Mine still idles when i feather it to idle then let go. it'll idle low though.

My MAP sensor is broken but still wired up but the plastic broke off of it when I was taking the intake off one time, and idk if has corroded abit. idk if that might be my problem.

MAP's work off of a vacuum if i'm not mistaken. If the plastic is broke, you may want to replace that first just to rule out the possibility of it causing problems.

A skateboard with a broken wheel is still a skateboard, but i guarantee you won't make a safe landing if you ollie over something.

It sticks out on the top front of the throttle body. Unplugs from the it.

Also, Shiano: I had it hooked up to a vaccum gage and it was running very low pressure at idle but then shoots up regular when its at 3000+ RPM. So it might be something witt he MAP.
