Well, I have been reading the site and about limp mode on several forums.... Here is the info 97 Avenger ES 2.5 V6 auto Has 137k on it.
Only have 2nd gear, no reverse, It tries to go into gear when I put the selector in R but it never engages..I can hear it trying but it never happens.
Driving from a stop, it goes to around 3800 rpm and then the infamous revving. There was a CEL but I have since reset the computer by unhooking the battery for 10 mins. didnt change the way the tranny acted though.
I have cleaned and checked for corrosion on the 3 relays on the firewall and they visually appear ok...is there a way to check them with a volt meter?
The car recently had a new starter put in it about 2 months prior to the problem...before I purchased it. I have read that some people have had a bad ground that the Trans and Starter share? Is this true? could this be my culprit? I have not had it in the air yet and am not familiar with the Avenger so any help here is appreciated on location and such.
I am planning on changing out the trans fluid and such due to the mileage anyhow and will be sure to use the proper type as I have heard these transmissions are SUPER touchy.
I need to get the codes read I know, but where is the TCM located? There is also a pigtail harness hanging down low in front of the car, I will check that when I get it in the air, possible this is the culprit?
What am I missing on what to try, and the big question is HAS ANYONE SUCCESSFULLY FIXED LIMP MODE AND IF SO HOW!!!??
Thanks and sorry for the long first post. I just want to get some final answers to those that have FIXED this issue or know of someone that has.
Change out the fluid, but I fear you're transmission is a lost cause. Even if you do a brief search for limp mode on this site, you'll see that almost everyone ends up with a dead transmission.
Changing the fluid has helped one or two so I wish you all the best.

Mod List. Um WAY too many to fit on here. But the engine can handle about 800HP
if you do not have reverse there is something other than limp mode wrong with your tranny, it is possible that there is an electrical problem, i have removed my tcm and drove my car, in limp mode of course, but it still had forward and reverse. as far as the starter ground and the tranny ground, i havent heard of a starter that doesnt ground through the case as long as you have a good ground connection through the battery to the body to the engine it should be fine but check all other grounds!!! check the connection on top of the solenoid pack, the big square connector with the bolt through it and the other square connector on top make sure they are not dirty. most of the time electrical problems are bad connections. good luck
Well I just checked the fluid and its pretty much non existant. Also found in the trunk a bottle of ATF Penzoil Stopleak lol!! SO I wonder if him thinking the stop leak was a good fix and ended up causing the tranny to quit working properly??
How many quarts of ATF-4 Do I need to get to take up to the shop that I am having change the filter and flush out the trans? Thanks guys
I think I will just get an appt with the local shop I use, Get it on the lift, have them pull the pan and see if its full of shavings first lol. If its clean looking I will have them flush it, and put in a new trans filter and pan gasket and refill with new ATF3-4 fluid and see how she does.
there is somekind of control shift module i dont know exactly the dealership fixed it i got lucky the first time second time the tranny was gone that was at 90k 3000 installed at dodge for a new one
YES! The Shift Control Module is a module that easily goes out because of where it is located. It doesn't have any kind of shield from dust and water, so once it collects enough from the road... yer screwed. lol. see below
ok, on the a604 tranny there is a sensor that gets dirt to it embarrassingly easy and goes bad just as easily (its outside the transmission). this sensor is the reason why alot of those transmissions have to be rebuilt (todd, sorry about the 1200) and it's one of the things the chrysler mechanics replace when they rebuild the transmission. a friend of mine (scott) worked for Ford, Chrysler, an GM as a certified mechanic (the chrysler dealers in the area still call him at least 3 times a month needing his assistance) and had to rebuild the SAME Avenger tranny 4 times because the manager told him to NOT replace that sensor. the last time he asked the Avenger owner personally if he would pay for the part, he would put it on without the manager knowing (this guy is FAST. he basically has time to sleep after every major repair because of how much time he's given based on the Chrysler Service Repair Manual.). After he did, he didn't have to rebuild it ever again. the guy stopped by and thanked scott for his expertise in that matter. I forget the name of the sensor but it's one that WE can put on with just ramps and sockets (and a nice list of cuss words but thats optional). 9/10 times its this simple little fits-in-the-palm-of-your-hand sensor.
i'm wanting to say that it's underneath. If you haven't yet, click on the link that that quote came from. it MIGHT have been mentioned in there. That WAS almost 2 years ago. lol
Yeah a location or pic of this sensor would be GREAT!!
I got my truck sold today so I need to get this car driveable soon! Wanna try the cheap fixes first and then if needed putting in a used one that I can get for $350. THen just have to have it installed.
