Can you braze exhaust pipe?
« on: July 21, 2008, 04:43:54 PM »

My dp is shot at the first flex piece. So i bought another flex pipe off ebay to throw in its place.I cut
the old flex out...I know i can clamp both ends with exhaust clamps but ill still have an exhaust leak.
Can i take some flux wire and my torch and braze the flex pipe to the Dp?I dont have the cash for
a new dp right now....or the money to have it welded at a shop.

Also how do i get the 02 sensors off, i have 3 of them holding the dp in there.Do i just wrench them
off like a bolt?I need this pipe to last me atleast a month before ill be able to afford  another one.

Right now i have a junk flex pipe wedged in there from autozone, but i want to replace it with the
actual flex pipe piece that i have.Any help would be great. Thanks

Aluminum doesn't like the heat of the exhaust system, so I'm gonna have to say it won't work.

...or the money to have it welded at a shop.

Any GOOD shop will only charge you $20 or less for those TWO welds.

There are 3 kinds of muffler shops here where i live.

  • Great work. Not the prettiest, but damn good welding (Least Expensive) - Childer's Muffler
  • Blah work and Blah welding (Midground on the price) - Baldy's Muffler
  • Great work. Show room type craftsmanship and good welding (and expensive as hell) - Curtis Muffler

At Childer's, to put on my muffler and the exhaust tip i bought for it, was $20. And it wasn't just an easy "ok, here here and here. I'm done" job either. He had to make a couple of custom pieces to better fit the exhaust pipe to the muffler.

Ask around. Let them know you just need a simple weld in two spots.

yes...i would ask around...

But it might be a little more spendy if it's in a tight spot and a pita to weld around.

not really. plus he can always take it off and have it welded at the shop and then put it back on. It's just the first flex pipe basically, right?

taking it off without at least tack welding it together, can cause alignment problems later.

They may have welded it, but I bet they didn't braze it Wink

The best explanation i could find quickly was concerning bicycle frames.

And bicycle frames run hot exhaust gases through them?

sigh. did you click on it to read it? lol

It told about over heating the metal, basically fatiguing it and it breaking just before the metal where the pipe becomes the weakest [welding].
