Hi. I want to instal a push button to start my car. I found a switch that can take a maximum of 20 amps. I will be re-wiring the start position on the steering column to this switch. Should 20 amps be enough? I know I could test it with a multimeter, but I was just wondering if someone knew it off the top of their head.

It should be fine. If you have doubts, find the fuse for your ignition and see what it is rated at.

20 amps is plenty. just make sure the fuse is in place.

You are only triggering a solenoid the aftermarket pushbutton start switches are 5 amps ... I've got an ignited brand one new in the box I'd let go for $20 it's green illuminated I think I mounted it in the cigarette lighter

Hey BV, with the Push Buttons, do you need a key in the switch at all or not? i'm asking because won't the column will lock when you turn the wheel if theres not a key in the ON position in the cylinder? How do you compensate for that?

Key goes to the run position you don't advance the key to "start" instead you hit the button

There's no way to have the switch stay in the on position and fool the locks into thinking you're 'locking it up for the night' is there? That way you can just unlock, sit, push, drive. lol.

Not if you lock the doors. If the switch is in the on position, you can't lock the door while the door is open. Plus you can have a covered button [Nuclear Missile Fire style] instead of a visible push button that way it just looks like a Nitrous button instead.
Plus, you're car has to actually look attractive to drivers for them to want to joyride in it. lol. just picking.

the best way to do it is to run it in conjuction with a remote start. our cars have whats called a sentry key . what that means is there is a small transmiter in the key that sends a signal to the ingnition letting it know the key is in the ignition. there are remote start accesories called pass locks that recieve the signal from the key and send it to the ignition. but any rate you will have to have a spare key either your spare or a dummie uncut from dealershipyou might be able to trick the ignition with a pass lock and by finding out what wire lights up when you turn it to the run position. take a multi meter check the resistance in the wire when its on and match that with a a resistor so you don't overload the circut. but then this will have to be powered constantly in order for it to work but you will still have to put ur key in to turn the wheel and out it in gear. so i think it would be a waste of time to wire it that way best way is probly traditional way because ur gonna have to put the key in any way

Ditto. We aren't that special. plus, i use a spare key to crank mine. the original was lost long ago. On my 99, i had the original, but there was never a problem using the spare key to crank it.
