hey guys i just got done doing a head gasket set replacement on my 1996 2.0L 4 cyl Dodge Avenger and it seems that my trans is slipping now. It worked fine before i did tha head gasket set. now it seems that it is leaking pretty bad and im not sure why or how it is. im thinking it may have been tweaked from lifting tha motor up and down on a jack. please help out any way you can id appreciate it
Your post title says tranny leaking. You subject says tranny slipping. Which is it? If it's both, it's slipping because it's leaking.
If it's leaking and you don't know why, take a cloth and wipe down the tranny. Chuck the rear wheels and put the front of the car on jackstands, start the car and put it in gear DO NOT GO UNDER THE CAR WHEN IT IS RUNNING. Wait until your friend tells you he sees something dripping. Turn the car off go under it and follow the leak pattern. Most likely going to be axle seals but who knows.
If it's slipping and you don't know why, check you fluid with the car on the ground. I'm assuming you have the A604 (automatic) tranny since you didn't say you clutch is slipping. The A604 is known to go bad. It was a poorly engineered transmission. You can put a cooler on it to make it last longer, but, usually, once it starts slipping you're out of luck.

Mod List. Um WAY too many to fit on here. But the engine can handle about 800HP
I just recently did a headgasket change on the car, a 96 dodge avenger with a 41TE 4-speed transmission. The car was on jackstands for about 3 weeks. When i pulled the car out of the garage, there where no leaks what so ever. I drove the car around for about 30 min. before i started have problems. First thing that would happen is while turning and acclerating, the rpms would go up and i wouldn't move. But then eventually something would grab and the tires would screech. It started happening more often after a few hours of driving. Now when at a stop, if i let off the brake, it doesnt move forward. When i hit that gas the rpms go up and it will eventually grab. when that happens if i dont keep the rpms up, the car will stall. I did check my fluid, and it was low, still on the dip stick. I added fluid and it seemed better for a little while.
Also, when im turning the car is when it leaks, like puddles. So, does this sound like a torque converter or transmission problem?
I'm going to talk to you like you know little about cars, don't take offense I'm just not sure where you are at mechanically.
The torque convert is LIKE a clutch. I know they're dramatically different but for simplicity sake hang with me. When you let the clutch out fast you get fast reaction at the wheels. When you hold the clutch in and barely get going and then drop the clutch you get a hard grab by the tires and a jerky feeling. You said the RPMs go up and then it doesn't move. Well if you keep your clutch in and rev the RPMs go up and you don't move. If the torque is going (due to low fluid because of the leaking) it will act exactly like your saying.
The symptoms that I read were the exact symptoms of a torque converter going. But because you're leaking fluid, that may be all that wrong. Unfortunately with the A604 tranny if you have a small problem it usually results in a big problem. Low fluid is like running your engine on low oil. It'll go for a while but you're going to do SERIOUS damage.

just out of curiosity have you check the hoses going from the transmission to the radiator ? the stock transmission oil cooler is inside the radiator and with years those hoses will start to crack and could leak when under pressure

do a unique engine swap or die trying bow to the torque meister , the 2.4L prophet
A torque converter is basically a fan connected to the engine blowing on a windmill connected to the gears, except instead of air; it's oil. In your case with it leaking so badly that oil's got a lot of air whipped into it and doesn't 'blow' with much force. At high speeds there's a mechanism that locks the input to the output for efficiency, but aerated oil's compressible and that screws up all the valving (ever had air in your brake lines? yeah...) so it's probably not unlocking, causing the stalls.
You've probably already done this by now but find the leak and fix it, fast.
