Engine not even trying to start
« on: June 07, 2008, 04:05:26 PM »

Hey guys, newbi here.  I am having an intermittant issue with my 97 Sebring.  Ocasionaly when i try to start the car, the starter does not even try.  All the power in the car, ie lights, radio, everything is good, but it doesn't even try to start.  When it first happened a couple of years ago, i found that locking it and unlocking it with the key fob a couple of times would remedy the situation.  I thought it had something to do with the alarm system, think it has a factory one, so I took it to the dealer and they said they disconnected it.  I still had the problem about once a year, but the key fob trick seemed to fix it.  Earlier this year, it started acting up again, and the key fob trick wouldn't work.  If i let it sit, it would start like nothing was the matter.  The length of time it had to sit varies from 20 minutes to overnight.  When that finally didn't work, took it to a mechanic who replaced the starter, and all was good until last evening.  I started it a couple of times during the day, went to work, and then had to go get something.  When i came out of the store, it would not start, wouldn't even try.  I let it sit for about 2 hours, came back, and it was still dead as a hammer.  I went back this morning to try again, and it started right up like nothing was ever wrong.  This is really the only issue I have had with the car, and it is infrequent, but seems to happen at the worst time, I wasn't sure the car would be there this morning in the area I had to leave it.  Has anyone had any similar issues.  It is a V6 car.  Thanks in advance for your help...

Could be an alarm issue, aftermarkets (maybe the stocker, but I don't know I haven't worked on one) sometimes have a Starter kill relay, so that power won't go from the ignition to the starter if someone tried to steal the car.

Try jumping the starter from the battery, if the car starts then thats a good chance.  Especially when the keyless would get it to work.

Mod List.  Um WAY too many to fit on here.  But the engine can handle about 800HP

or plain and simple battery pole issue
disconnect both plugs
clean them properly and grind any crust
connect them tight

when there is too much corrosion the poles will let small amount of current flow throught which would explain radio lights etc
but the 50+ amp that require a starter to run is too much

But why did the remote make a difference?  Just coincidence?

couple of things just to clear up, just in case:

Lx?
Lxi?
Jx?
Jxi?
4 door?

I'm not sure if it will really matter or not. But there was more than one V6 available for the Sebring, but, that is because the sebring came in 3 flavors: 2dr coupe, 2dr convertible, and 4 door sedan. The wiring may be different, especially given the battery location on the convertible model.

the keyless entry is made by auto-mate, but when i googled them, there is no number to get in touch.  Looking at other posts, I think it could be the alarm relay, assuming this is factory, and i know what assume breaks down to, where would the relay be located?

If you aren't any good with electronics, take it to someone that is.  If you live in Wisconsin I'll help you if not good luck!

You have to find where they have the relay system for the alarm.  Could be near the brain could be under the hood or under the dash, could be anywhere they felt like putting it.  Once you find it, you have to bypass it (rip the damn thing out and just connect it directly.).

Again if you you're unsure take it to a pro, you don't want to dick anything up.

Get a new battery, dump the junk that you currently have.

i'm not exactly sure how to answer that, but to me, factory is factory. Anything that doesn't come from the dealer is aftermartket.

I have a 97 LXI Coupe and the anti=theft starter relay is located under the dash.  It is to the left of the steering column. It is on square of white plastic. It should have 3 relays connected with one empty slot.  The anti-theft rely is the one diagonal to the empty slot. The relay on mine has blue on the bottom. My car is an automatic. the empty slot is for a manuel transmission.
