More knocking..
« on: May 12, 2008, 08:04:33 PM »

Well even after changing out my outer tie rod end, there is still some knocking in the front driver side of the car. The tie rod end did need to be changed. I have found that when i am going at a fast enough speed(aroung 60 mph) and coast, the knocking becomes more constant. If I apply light brakes or heavy throttle during coasting or driving at those speeds, the knocking almost stops if not completely. So it seems that when there is resistance to a certain part, it stops. Any ideas?

Too many possibilities.  Could be a loose brake caliper, could be a sway bar link, could be a control arm issue.  Could be the strut isn't tight up on the upper bushings, it could be the strut isn't sitting in the cradle tight enough.  Could be a wheel bearing issue.

I mean without seeing it with my own eyes and doing some test myself I can't give you any more than just a list of things.  You can go through look at every bolt, go through with your torque wrench (PLEASE tell me you have a torque wrench) and make sure all the torque specs are met on all the bolts.  Look at all the bushings, do they need to be replaced?

There's a lot under there for you to check.  And don't forget about the upper control arm, it bolt up UNDER the HOOD.  Same as part of the Strut assembly bolts up under the hood.  All those things need to be checked.  Then check motor mounts, not likely but possible if they're loose or REALLY bad.

Hope that gives you some kind of help. Undecided

+1 karma. You were right on the money. Man, I would kiss you right now. Ok, probably not, but I would buy you a beer or two. Grin  ;)This has been bothering me every single time I drive my car ever since I got it. You see the problem is that where the long bolt that goes up in the hood for the control arm, where the bolt contacts the body, there was no more body. It is rusted and the hole is enlarged. So the spacer dropped down and was not tightened on anything. Look at the pic for more info. I had checked every thing else before today, but I had never thought about looking there. Anyway, my temporary fix for it was to put a large and thick washer between the spacer and nut and body, at the top(under the hood) So instead of the spacer being tighted to the bottom, it tight at the top. I think I will weld the washer later on at the bottom and fix the rust. Thanks again. I love this forum.

Glad you got it fixed.  I figured if I listed absolutely everything that it could be, you'd find it in my list LOL.

The important thing is that it didn't completely rip off when you were driving.  Glad it worked out!
