wheel shake trick
« on: April 16, 2008, 04:54:28 PM »

first a little backstory, my tire blew, so i take it to pep boys and get all 4 new tires (the other ones were about dead anyway, and why buy 1 tire then 3 tires 10,000 miles later, so i went and got the 4 tires for the price of 3 deal

anyway the guy calls me back and says my tie rods are junk(which i suspected) and then the supervisor calls me back and tells me my hub/bearing is bad, and he wiggles the tire 3 o'clock to 9 o'clock, i give it a try and sure enough it wiggles, but it did not wiggle 12-6, correct me if im wrong, but wouln't a 3-9 shake only indicate a bad tie-rod which the other tech(who had actually looked at my suspenstion) had already told me, NOT a bad hub?

sometime later this week, im going to get the tire off and inspect it myself, cause i just had the 2 seconds, of "here look".

ALSO

how much do tie rod ends cost? i'd probably end up getting a set, the pass side's boot is gone, and the driver's is getting there.

and then if the pep boys manager is correct and its my hub, how much would that cost, and how difficult are they on these. i've changed hubs before, and it ranges from 3 bolts and the castle nut, all the way to basically replacing the spindle.

oh and P.S. my baby LOVES new tires, stops better, goes better.

Hubs will run you 100-120 per depending on who you get them from and what brand. If you get them from your local parts store, ask them which ones are the 'economical' ones. Then stay away from them. lol

Can't remember the price on the tie rod ends though. Have a 2nd opinion done on the Hubs, just don't tell them what you know, cuz i remember when mine had to be replaced, it was 12, 6 that moved, not 9 and 3.

If 12 and 6 dont move, then your hub bearing isn't bad. If 3 and 9 moves, it's either you inner tie rods, outer tie rods, or both.

thats what i thought now i just gotta get her back off her tires and double check

because i had to stop myself from callin the guy a moron when he shook it 3-9 and told me the hub was bad. and the tech, who seemed much smarter than the manager btw, pointed out the tie rod about 3 minutes into the job. oh, i also have a slightly bent spot on the bead of my rims, its small and located in such a way that it shouldn't affect it, but im just curious as to how that happened. i know it wasnt me.

If your wheel bearing was bad, they generally make noise more so when turnig right or left.Should be a growling sound or like a friend of mine said, sounds like a helicoptor is tailing me.

Don't go cheap on tie rods. They are what keeps your front wheels straight. Imagine one breaking when your going 80 on the interstate.

Moog brand is around double the price of cheap no-name parts but the quality is worth the extra.

And about the wheel cap, i'm located in Missouri. Shipping is cheap due to they weigh practically nothing. It could use a fresh coat of paint so like $10 shipped works for me.

define
It could use a fresh coat of paint

like totally scratched up, or just minor knicks

and for the tie rods, it basically boils down to the more it costs, the longer before i can scrape the cash up to do it. and if i get it in three weeks, i can wrangle up a free alignment (yay, community college automotive program), if not i'll kinda be guessing....and i know my alignment is ate up. but ill be working more this summer, so i suppose i could drop it off at sears sometime, eh...ill look into it....dang you for giving me options.... Tongue but thanks for the advice Cheesy

And you think Advance no-name parts are better than autozone? $65 for all 4 right? You get what you pay for.
