steering noise

this year is the first year my car has seen winter (new hampshire/ Connecticut) with no garage. I drive my car about once or twice every week but whenever i do. Whenever i go over a bump the entire car creaks and whenever i steer the wheel it soundls like a witch being burned in oil... does anyone know could be the source of the problem?

Jack the front end of the car up and try to re-create the noise by moving the wheel around. Could be a bad wheel bearing, could be a suspension issue, could be some bushings, there is quite a bit.

check for belts slipping too and check you have enough power steering fluid

check and make sure that the rack and pinion isn't messed up or leaking.

so i got in my car today and went to drive it to the garage, and there were no creaks or shcreeching when i turned the wheel. It's a Good Friday Miracle!!!! Shocked

...not really i think that the screeching and the creaking has to do with the temperature. Today is a lovely 50 degree day in CT and in the past when the car has exhibited the problem, the tempoerature was in the 30's or below.

I just got the belts changed. I dont think it could be a wheel bearing or a suspension issue because the car would still be making noise no matter what the temperature is...

im stumped. Undecided

when it gets cold, with all the mechanical parts in your engine and the contractions along with links to your steering wheel, there is bound to be some part rubbing against another. your power steering fluid doesnt flow as well when its cold out, especially if its old fluid. no lubricant in btw means friction and noise.

what classifys power steering fluid as old? i think i put some new stuff in about 4 months short of a year ago... and got just under full tank of that stuff.

I'm still thinking loose belts .... colder wetter temps it slips making the noise , when you turn the pump works harder , harder pump= more drag
