more than you can afford. remember the are BMWs. roughly they are about 26k bare bones and ive seen optioned ones (options is something BMW loves to do) for well over 30k, and they wont drop in price from used to much either. sorry...i wanted one too until i started lookin into it, just to much money for me now.
you have a lot of options with that price range. i got my VW with all luxury features for $10k. my buddy got a gorgerous e36 M3 for $20k, but i've seen some other awesome M3's in your price range.
IMO go with German cars repair price and gas might hit your pockets... my first 2 sensors (MAF and 1 post-cat o2) cost me $400... 2 spark plug wiries = $80 and it drinks only Super gas: ~$3.30/gal
BUT!!! after i fixed/tuned it, washed and polished it, daaaaamn thats when you fully start to enjoy the leather heated seats, premium sound system, power, etc. and SEXYNESS!!!! hahahahaha
i can't wait till spring/summer time to roll with open sunroof and windows 24/7
german cars FTW...wow lucky you about that mini being so cheap i havent found one for near that price used here in orlando. though i have looked in a while either. the speedo is the only thing i dont like about them other than that amazing.
Ive been lookin into cars for after basic and tech school since the bring is falling appart much faster than i can fix it (being cut off by a expidition with a ball hitch hasnt helped) and im shootin for a 06-07 GTI or a Mazdaspeed 3 since they both handle amazingly and the hatch is gonna be very useful, or a toyota tacoma x runner(hey it posted a .90g in the skidpad). but im honestly leaning for the GTI unless i can find a R32 for a fair price that hasnt got a jillion miles on it.
go with GTI vr6 if you want strait up power. if you want to mod engine go with 1.8t since adding some simple mods can + HP (as simple as adding an intercooler and reprogramming ECU to run higher ocrane gas and more psi of boost). R32s are expensive and you wont find decent one in your price range, decent once float around $18-22k
also yeah, hatch heps a lot. the rear seat cushions can be taken out and backsupport can fold down creating huge space in the back.
Yea i have been looking at vr6 GTIs, they cleary come with more horsepower as i can tell, but the 1.8T has more mods>>> huh.... the vr6s arent turboed are they?

My price range is going to be 25k. and R32s are good for that but most have over 50k miles and i dont really want to spend that much money for that many miles. I guess i got the years wrong im going for the MKV GTI and thats a 2.0t with 200 hp and 207 lb-ft. Its a little more expensive than the Mazda and doesnt perform near the same level but I cant help it i like the lil car. Honestly i should get the little taco since its cheaper and hell its a freakin truck so its more versatile but i really like those two cars (the MS3 and the GTI) So i dunno we'll see what happens after tech school.
on Mark 4 GTI vr6 you can add turbo because engine pretty much located at same spot as i4 so v6 has that extra space by fire wall to put the turbo. there are many people who make their VR6s into VRTs hehehe
