trans cooler location
« on: September 15, 2006, 06:27:34 PM »

ok, so i'm installing a transmission cooler on sunday, and on ASEC, they say to wedge it between the radiator and the nose of the car... but that has been PROVEN to not work, due to the fact that the radiator will actually heat up the transmission cooler. Soooooo, should I mount it on the bottom where the air dam is and just put a mesh screen in front to protect it? wouldn't that make more sense? anyone who has a transmission cooler installed, let  me know where you mounted it, and do I need to add mopar tranny fluid or is the current amount already in the car enough? let me know...

i had mine originaly where you are talking but i later moved it to where the fog lit is supose to me(removed the foglight cover and put it there). I am liking it in this spot better do to the fact it is getting more air. As for the addition of more fluid i needed to cause i also took the radiator out of the line and i lost alot a fluid, my opinion i would pick of more fluid just to be on the safe side also if i were you i would flush the system and add atf 4

it will work in front of the radiator, just use the spacers to push it away from the radiator a bit.
you should pick up some extra fluid. youwon't need much, less than a quart.

Yeah, I mounted my 8 pass in the air dam on my 98 and I think it works really good, but, if you feel like your radiator is loosing cool air, just put a cooling fan on the front of the cooler.

What size tranny cooler should I get? I was just in at Chrysler and had almost 600.00 work done on my tranny.  Im glad some of it was covered by warranty.
I was reading on the internet that it needs one because the stock one is to small is that true?  i just dont want all the work that was just done to go down the hole.

would this one work?

DMS installed a "Huge" 8 Pass Cooler in front of my radiator... Works fine and mounted up nicely.. Check my Cardomain page for how it looks. Wink

you don't have to worry about the trans cooler being to big since there is a bypass that will make it non functional at anything below about 30 psi anyway.

Hey 98,

Chrysler added a cold weather precaution to keep from jacking up the output shaft and bearing in case the lube  was too cold and oem trans cooler pressure restricted flow. In the case where the temp made the fluid move slower the pressure drop across the filter would reach 32 psi and a spring loaded valve between the outlet to the cooler and the inlet from the cooler would open and trans fluid would be diverted into the lube circuit without leaving the trans.  Trans would have enough heat rejection from the cold temp the cooler was not needed.
