98 Avenger stalling, loosing rpms. No codes
« on: January 26, 2008, 11:58:18 PM »

I got a 98 avenger 2.5 es automatic. It randomly dies at idle in gear and park. If I am rolling or on the gas the check engine light come on as it bogs down and looses rpms quickly, light goes out in a second or two and regains power. When it does die it will start right back up no problem. Have tried the key dance several time and it gives me no codes. Had it about a month, don't know when the last tune up was. Please Help

Being a 98 I don't know if the Keydance works with that year.  Take it to Advance auto, or NAPA and have the codes scanned.  if it's only when at idle, I would guess idle air control.  That sounds like your issue.

Mod List.  Um WAY too many to fit on here.  But the engine can handle about 800HP

Mine just started doing that too... I think it's my IAC... I'll just let off the gas and go to come to a stop and it'll drop down to 500rpm then bounce right back up. Almost feels like it's electrical and it's just gonna cut out.. I dunno... Huh

Look inside the throttle body for coking(looks like black soot). If dirty clean bore and throttle plate with carb cleaner and a small brush. Avoid too much carb cleaner near the TPS as it may damage it. This generally will solve your idling problem, if not look toward replacing the IAC. I would have it scanned before throwing high $ parts at it though.
