bad trans or broken axle??
« on: September 17, 2008, 01:33:09 AM »

99 Avenger ES v6 auto 120K

I was backing out of my parking spot at work and when i put it in drive, nothing happened.  the parking lot was on a hill and when i put it in park, it kept on rolling.  i let it roll back into the spot and turned it off while my foot was on the brake.  i started it back up and when i shift it into any gear, i can hear something happening but the car just keeps on rolling forward and when i put it back into park it sounded like it tried to do it while the car was rolling.

unfortunately i was 45 miles from home so i just had it towed 3 miles down the road to aamco ($75!).  they said it was definately a trans problem and would be $1500 to fix and that may be more or less depending on parts but they didn't look at it unless i wanted them to and that would be 400 if they didn't fix it! so i had it towed to a relatives house 25 miles away for another cool 250 bucks.

i think can rule out a cable cause i can hear something moving when i shift it into gear.

i hear that even when the trans is bad park will still work and i can definately hear park stopping the trans.  i had a torque converter go out in a car before and park still worked so i don't think its that.

i think (read 'hope') that it is a snapped axle.

any thoughts?

thanks.

Well crawl underneath and look.  You'll see a busted axle.  Just because you hear something does not mean it can't be a cable.  It's one of the "simple" fixes, so I'd follow that lead as far as I could.  You didn't see a puddle of fluid under your car when it moved did you?

Mod List.  Um WAY too many to fit on here.  But the engine can handle about 800HP

no, there was no fluid.  i'm gonna see the car saturday and i'll take a look at the axles and the cable.  the car has had no problems up until now and i really do no want to lose the car because of this.

does the speedo move? cause if the speedo moves its probably a broken axle, or worse, the differential(which is notoriously bad on these cars)  if the speedo doesnt move its probably a problem inside the trans.

most likely you broke your spider gears inside , however you can do a visiual on your axle
the voilosity joint  will generally tear the boot up , it has 4 boots  where the axle would
break  and last but not least be safe but put the car in the air with wheels off ground
start and put in gear and see if either axle is trying to work but seperated insite the joint,
Roger Reynolds, Hannibal Transmission and roadrage quick change gears...rreynold@nemonet.com
