Upgrade Camshafts Upgrade Exhaust Upgrade Headers Upgrade Pistons
There's a lot you can do. Are you just looking at going as fast as possible, or are you looking to hit 200HP. What's the over all goal and budget?

i just wanna make some more power out of it. 200 is my goal but if theres more i can do without droping the block out from the car then im listening. liike simple bolt ons and stuff. i might consider a turbo but i dont wanrt the hassle of putting one on. a cam kit would be nice, but before i do all this iot really needs a new timing belt. what kinda power can i expect out of a cam kit and other stuff?

There's not really any combo of bolt-ons that are going to get you up to the 200 mark. If you can, pull the head off the car when you're going to change the timing belt. Take it to a machine shop and have them open it up. Porting a head is going to allow you to see the biggest gains, aside from a turbo.
A high-flow intake manifold coupled with a larger throttle body is next, but you need to get the exhaust out of the engine, so now you're looking at upgrading the headers and exhaust piping.
For a quick "easy" gain, you can build a bolt-on turbo kit for about a grand. You can get everything you need and put it on yourself. Run 5-8 pounds of boost without building the motor. That will put you up about 30-50 extra horse depending how much boost you run.
You best investment is going to be to port out the head. You can add the turbo later.

Just make sure you get the word up front that if anything breaks on the parts of the engine that the mechanic was working on, THEY will be fixing it and THEY will be apologizing to you.

i guess ill start with porting the heads. im not changing the timing belt someone else is. can i advance the timing on it for more power? my frined has a ford escort and her timing belt was just replaced. out of the blue her gas milage was cut in half and the car has more power than it should. i mean like tire buring power. it was kinda weird then we all guessed it was the timing might have been advanced. whats the easiest way to do that? unlike my other car i dont think i can just turn the distributor. or can i?

i'll let nykon and DT comment on that one. although i will throw this in, you need a manifold that will accept the turbo. identical snowflakes and all, savvy?

DON'T advance your timing. Leave it alone.
As for the turbo, it will work, but you'll need to get a custom made exhaust manifold. OR you can get the log style you'll find all over eBay (Don't buy any of them, you need to make sure it's a legit one.) and get an adapter.
I'm not sure which turbo came on those 2.3 Mustangs though. You'll have to take some measurements.

Alain, I thought you were going to be nice!
oh and Austin I forgot you have the I4. The 420a (your motor) doesn't have a distributor, it's a coil pack. You can mess with the timing, with adjustable camgears. Again don't.

Why skip it? And I'm not sure what turbo it was that came on the 2.3 get back to me with it. You'll need to take some measurements, and see if it'll bolt on to a standard t3/t4 flange. (I'm guessing it won't.)
