when my probe had a dual 12's in a patriot box with a lightning audio amp, Only had 300w going to each and even the two sound shops here thought i was pushing more. It was a very modest setup and i was very pleased with it

Rockford Fosgate and kicker have never failed me. I also vouche for MTX. I am trying out Alpine Type R's right now... they do have a very good "impress" factor.

Everything I have ever owned have been competition subs though so you get what you pay for. (except JL Audio) <--- junk IMO.

lol

JL subs are alright but still overpriced for what they are. Their amps aren't worth the aluminum they are made out of though.

Everything I have is Alpine right now except the sub, JL's 12W3v3-2.  I was going to get a 10" Alpine (SWR-1042D I think) in a custom box but ended up going with the 12" JL in an off the shelf box to save some cash, on the assurance it would sound about the same.  I find the whole system a bit boomy right now though and lacking in lo-mid, hopefully it'll sound better once it's tuned (they advised I let everything break in for at least six weeks before bringing it back in for tuning).

I don't know how they sound but I like the look of JL's new TW5 thin series.  It would be nice to have a shallow box custom fit behind the full width and height of the rear seats without extending too far into the trunk.  My friend's getting one in his Eclipse Spyder in a couple of months so I'll know if it's for me or not after that.  (Actually I'll know if the tuning fails to make the 12W3v3 sound any good.)

My Kicker comps sit in a box that is almost a perfect fit like that... sits right under the 6x9s and no further into the trunk. I think theres a pic around here somewhere.

here: (actually looking at it now, it sits further back then the 6x9s)

i've never heard of speakers having to be broken in...

You'll find people in some forums swearing by it and others saying it's complete crap.  A technical write up from someone who designs auditorium systems for a living can be found at audioholics.com and makes it sound like there's some merit to it, but that 6 weeks is way more time than is really required.

You could always just put in a cd that's got alot of ranges from highs to lows and just play that all night as you go to bed with a battery charger hooked up to it. lol.

I had some competition Vegas back in the day, and I blew them overly quick, they replaced them but told me to break them in for the first month before really laying into them.  I didn't blow the second set.  Only time I ever heard of it.

I have never broken in speakers, and have never heard of it also.

I wouldn't bother 'breaking them in' in terms of doing anything special before general listening, but if they're going to spend an hour or two putting test tones through my system to set the parametric for flat response I may as well make sure the spider and surrounds are as loose as they're going to get (which does affect response) before they go to all that trouble.  From the sounds of that article six weeks is uber overkill, but I had other stuff to do to the car in the meantime anyways.
