Finding TDC Pre-Timing Belt Change
« on: January 15, 2008, 09:31:29 PM »

Ok, I'm planning on doing my timing belt, water pump, and rollers this weekend while this may seem like an obvious answer, in the interest of "measuring twice cutting once" and all those other "do it right the first time" sayings... The Haynes manual describes a method to find TDC without removing the timing belt cover by removing spark plugs and using a compression gauge as well as a dowel rod in cylinder #1 to find TDC. My question is, since I am obviously removing the timing belt cover anyway, can I just line up the timing marks on the crank and cam to find TDC without going through compression tester/dowel rod steps? I could not find a clear answer to this in any of the forums. Thank you.

easiest way is take very thing off up too the timing belt.

then put the crank pulley back on and turn it until the crank lines up with the mark on the oil pump housing.
