Help please with smoking motor - Not external
« on: January 06, 2008, 05:42:35 PM »

Greetings from Germany. My car is a 1996 2.0 I4 5 speed manual avenger.

I have been reading how-to and do it yourself threads and viewing pics in the forums for the last few days about the work involved with the cylinder head gasket replacement as well as other fixes for problems. I am not sure if my gasket needs replacing but I have an updated gasketavailable for install. Not sure of whats on the car already. The car received a new dealer installed shortblock about 50,000 miles ago (back in 2003). Its now at 185,000 miles.

A few weeks ago I took the car to a dealer to find the problem for smoking and high oil consumption and they performed a compression test and the compression was fine (so I suppose the rings are fine). They would not do anything to the car. They told me that the intake was damaged internally and that part cost more than the value of the car - this is the reason for the smoke and high oil consumption. Stealerships are full of chit.

I have owned the car for two years and about a year ago it just started smoking and consequently it consumes a lot of oil. I still cannot accurately tell what the culprit is.

There are no trouble codes, no loss of coolant, no overheating even at top speed on the autobahn, no milky oil, and no oil in the coolant. The intake is horribly coated with oil. This may be normal from the EGR but I seriously doubt that the intake is damaged.

So far I have changed a coolant temperature sensor when I changed the thermostat, replaced both oxygen sensors, I just cleaned the throttle body and idle air control valve and not sure what to do next. I will get somw seafoam when I come to the USA im March.

Any ideas and help appreciated. Sorry for the long post.  My options are limited - fix this car myself, junk it, or buy a new motor (which cuts deep into my 2003 cobra mod money). I am searching and researching and more searching.

MANY THANKS

did you change the PCV valve ?
it coud be stuck open and the vacuum in the intake manifold will swallow oil from inside the valve cover

I plan to buy and replace the PCV valve tomorrow and seafoam it later. I will look into replacing a few emission related sensors and EGR valve as necessary. Starting to get confidence and motivation. I am happy to see so many high performance and nice styled Avengers. Its a very rare car here.

Where are you in Germany?
How do you have a car over 10 years old in Germany?
PCV valve would be a good place to start.  The only other thing I could think of is the valve stem seals if you are sure the rings are good.

What kind of oil are you using?

I am in Heidelberg (work) but I live in Hockenheim. Thats the town with the Formula1 racetrack. Germany is fine with 10 - 50 year old cars. I beleive its japan where its not allowed.

From the back side of the throttle body and well into the upper intake is OILY. I will start with the PCV valve.

if it does turn out to be the pcv you could also try a oil catch can to filter out unwanted oil to the intake.

Danke Pugsley. I plan to adapt a catch can on there after I cleanout the intake with seafoam. I will install one on my cobra as well. GREAT IDEA. I will add a HOW TO/DO IT YOURSELF as well. This smoking problem has annoyed me for a while and I really will be a bit upset if its this simple. But also happy. I got plans for my Avenger this summer.

I agree, sounds like a bad PCV.
