Pass. side half-shaft removal?
« on: January 09, 2008, 09:39:32 PM »

Am trying to replace the diff. seal on the pass side, but ran into a problem...does the pass. side half shaft just side out of the bearing(brake side)? or do i have to take the boot apart to remove the shaft to replace the seal? hopefully that makes sense...

The only way to remove it from the bearing is to remove the axle nut, and loosen up everything holding the bearing tight (lower control arm, strut cradle, ETC) the pull the bearing away from the axle and the axle will slide out.  Then pop it out of the transmission.

Mod List.  Um WAY too many to fit on here.  But the engine can handle about 800HP

I have removed:

1. pin
2. castle nut
3. washer
4. brake caliper
5. brake bracket
6. brake rotor

This is what I have tried:

A. Put castle nut back on, placed board on nut, hit with large hammer numerous times....nothing
B. Took castle nut off, placed 5-ton puller on, tighted down until it started wrecking the threads on puller...nothing
C. Left 5-ton puller on( tighted down), added heat by a benzo torch..... nothing

Should I:

A. Add more heat until its "cherry red" with puller applied?
or
B. Take the shaft apart at the boot?

Here's a picture.  Sorry the writing is crude.  You need to remove the four bolts shown in the picture.  And pull the Bearing assembly away from the engine/tranny.  The Axle will slide out, the pop it out of the tranny.

ya, the only problem with that is the shaft is in the way and I can't get a wrench on the bolt ... if i could move the half shaft in alittle bit, i could use a box wrench to break them free.  Angry

when I did mine i searperated the upper ball joint, sway bar end link, and lower strut mount. then pounded the end of the shaft with a mallet and it came right out of the hub.

Your pic is too large and for some reason I can't scroll over to see it but if you unbolt the 2 control arms from the K member and unbolt the sway bar link, the whole assembly will swing out far enough to pop that axle out of the transaxle.

Hmmmm I can scroll over and see it.  But it sounds like I will be driving to Menasha, WI to help him.  So we're all good. Because let's face it, I'm the best  Wink  (Which is why my money sink-hole of an engine isn't running)
