I came to realize that the best way is to swap it out
« on: December 24, 2007, 11:38:11 PM »

Hi Every one. well here is the thing, and i am seriously thinking of doing this.
I bought a 95 dodge avenger with the 420a engine{2.0doch} and with a 5spd manny' a month ago. It doesnt run.
The timing belt was broken when i bought the car, which is why the whole car costed me 300 dollars.
I already bought a timing belt ahead but the thing that I discovered that it is actually not so cheap to get the timing belt replaced{300-500 dollars} in this paticular car, and not only that, I came to find that the 420a engine is an interference engine, which is what i have in this car, and that means if the timing belt brakes, it is most likely that the valves will be damaged, which is not good.!
well, after thinking and thinking, i decided that maybe i should just get a used engine with good milage on it and drop it in my car.
now, ive been looking on car-parts.com for used engines in my area, and it seems like these lil pricks around my area want alot of money for these engine with more than 100,000 miles on the.
I was looking engines from  the avengers, sebrings, talons, and eclipses.{non turbo versions = 420a engines}. all of the search results just came up with the same results for the avengers/sebrings/eclipses and the talons.
I got a lil frustrated, but then a light bulb ligthed in my head. I remember seeing or reading some where that the hyundai cars, i forgot what model, have the same engine as the avengers/eclipses, which is the 420a engine, and also, I believe that the dodge neons{95-99} have the same engine as well.
what i want to know is 2 things:
1 - which hyundai car model has the 420a engine it{same as the 2.0doch engines that are in our avengers}, and is it possible to swap that engine from that hyundai and put it into my avenger without any modifications/fabrications?
or:
2 - can I use the engine from the 95-99 dodge/plymouth neon and put it into my dodge avenger?

thanks a bunch every one.

No Hyundai.  And the Neon's head is reversed.  So you'll have some problems with matching up the exhaust.

95-99 Mitsubishi Eclipse
95-99 Eagle Talon
95-99 Dodge Avenger
95-99 Chysler SeBring

All those models also came with different motors, so make sure it's the 420a.

Pull your current motor, pull the head off, check the valves and pistons.  Replace as necessary.  Or just rebuild it with some high compression JE pistons for a bit more HP over stock.  Are you just going to use it as a Daily Driver or are you thinking of upgrading later?

I would love to pull my current motor out, but i dont have the tools to pull it out, not to mention that thing that you lift the motor with and drop it back in the engine bay. as far as rebuilding it, i never touched a 4 cylinder engine before.
but actually, i am going to use it probably as a daily driver, not even that much, maybe 2-3 times a week. I just want to have that car fixed.
here is another update, I found a 98 eclipse motor with 35,000 miles for a very decent price, in good running condition, and i emailed the seller to see if he still has it. The thing is though that I dont know what im gonna do with that motor once i buy it. I mean, i never did any engine swaps, so im gonna be stuck more or less.
but while we at it, i was wondering, will non-turbo engine from a 90-94 eclipse/talon will fit my 95 avenger? or its a no go?

Swapping motors aren't too difficult.  Especially the 420a plenty of engine bay room.  There are probably places around that will let you rent an Engine hoist.  But if you're not sure about your skills, I would take it in somewhere.  Pulling the motor won't take more than two hours max by a good mechanic.

yeah, im no expert, but if u have at least someone else there and some good info, like what is avail. on this board. you can get it done, as long as you have somewhere to put the engine while its out. Darktengu and Nykon are doing alot of work on their 420A, so they can give u a lot of help as far as technical info goes, since your putting the same engine in, it shouldnt be that difficult. a manual can halp (chilton as suggested by DT) haynes is not as good I believe. dont worry, just be confident and like I said, it wouldnt hurt to have a friend help you, u can have it done in a day if u do. I'll check our other postings to see if i find any relevant info. i know the 96 sebring I had even though v6 had a few differences from the 1999 avenger v6, the venge is cali spec, so that could explain and wouldnt be a fair judgement.  Im just saying the 98 eclipse may have a few different plugs here n there. a write-up or manual is all u need.

My personal mechanic has built and sold over 35 hot rods and medium range drag cars. His office is a nice collection of pictures on one wall. He takes his time and guarentees a 100% working engine swap [given the replacing engine is good] in under 2 days. Now, he's not slow, just meticulous and he still keeps his other customers on schedule WHILE doing the swap, and with TODAY'S engines with all the wires and hoses, that's pretty damn good IMO.

I see. So it is not a big deal according to you guys.
But the thing is though that I dont have any one that I know of that lives close to me and willing to help me. I mean, there was this one guy from asec, his user name is babeboy, that was talking about helping me do the motor swap one day, but it never came about because of our different schedules. This was almost a year and a half ago.
However, in the past 30 days that I bought this car, Ive been thinking and talking and talking and thinking of what should i do, and i spoke to him{babeboy} a few times on the interenet, and i dont know what it is but he doesnt answer most of my pm's, while some times he did once or twice. But if it was me, i would really count on it because it seems like hs is busy or something.
so the only way that is left for me is either find some one else that is willing to help me, which i dont know how i will find that some one, or my last and least option, is take it to a mechanic and have him swap it out. which is probably gonna cost me houndreds, and i cannot afford that right now.
this is so stressful...

If I had some vacation time.  Or if I hit the lottery.  Unfortunately I have no vacation time, and I don't buy many Lotto Tickets.
