spark plugs suck...
« on: November 07, 2007, 12:08:46 AM »

I went to change my spark plugs today, pulling out the boot, i noticed it was loaded with oil. i know it had oil on it, but i couldnt stand the bad gas mileage i was getting anymore. ($3.25/gal for regular gas). this goes back to my car leaking oil..i thought i fixed it..i drove it around for a while n it was fine. today when i went to change the plugs there was oil all over it.

so i proceeded to remove the spark plugs in the front...noticed that as soon as i got one plug out, it was immediately drenched with oil....i didnt evven see it before it got the oil on the tips. one of the plugs broke (dont know how, the tip that connects to the wires), so i replaced it with one of the ngk's I bought. put the other two back in, n now my car runs really rough and accelerates really slow.

now this car has a warranty on the engine, im sure they cover if oil goes into the cylinders right? i mean, its not my fault it started leaking, happened after i got it back from the dealer after the tranny work, im not gonna spend tons of money fixing it, im just gonna swap it out, n get what i can from the warranty, should only cost me $100 (deductible) ill have my mechanic put a 3.0 in.

Mod List.  Um WAY too many to fit on here.  But the engine can handle about 800HP

If Im understanding you correctly, the plug wells were filled with oil, not the cylinders themselves right?

If you pull off the valve cover, there is the seal around the perimeter as well as three little "O" shaped gaskets that go around each plug hole. Just order up a gasket kit and replace them. Common problem as cars with plugs through the valve cover start to age. Also, replace ALL the plugs at once, and if you cant, at least replace with the same model. NEVER mix and match plugs.

If the engine has been replaced and the dealership is the one that installed it, installed the plugs, filled the engine with oil, and slapped a warranty on it, i'd say they were the ones responsible since someone obviously either didn't use a good gasket, or didn't tighten something down to spec.

yeah i never really planned on mixing them, but after i saw what happened, i wasnt even about to remove my manifold to remove the ones in the back. i spoke w/ the mechanic and he did mention those little "o" rings. i wanna take it there, but im almost 100% certain i have oil in the cylinders, what do i do about that?

The front valve cover gasket in the 3.0 looks to be pretty easy to do, mines starting to leak a bit.

As far as oil in the cylinders, what makes you say that? If there is a little bit in there, then it should burn off. If those little o rings are leaking, that wouldnt cause oil to run into the cylinder. When you pulled the plug out, what did the tip look like? Was it white and tan looking, wet and brown or caked up with black dry soot and carbon?

i got it fixed, i figure the oil in the cylinder would burn off. which it did...my car smoked for a bit, but i got it fixed..u get karma jim.

i replaced the o rings and they came with rubber gaskets for the valve cover which sucked ass. so i just made my own.

the car runs sooo much better with my ngk copper v power. the others were all brown and had a slight ash tinge to it. but the car is running fine now.. gonna do an oil change tomorrow and get everything ready for winter and ice. wont have pics. the manifold of this car was ridiculously hard to get off. made me wonder how i was ever able to get the one offf the sebring w/o any knowledge of what bolt was where.

it seemed like they had never been changed. the rear boots were flooded w/ oil, but i dipped the socket wrench in a few times, dried it each time till i had most of the oil gone. then i just cleaned everything placed the o rings on gaskets spark plug wires got replaced too..threw em on n im good to go.

Well thank you for the karma.

In bad cases, the oil can seem through the boot and serve as a voltage drain point for the plugs (cant remember the specific term) but its kinda what happens with old wires in the rain. you will get some loss of power.

And yeah our cars suck quite a bit... I do bosch 100K so I never have to do them again lol it sucks. Being that Im a mechanic I absolutely hate having to repair my own car cuz I dont get paid for it lol

Please read the post I made in that thread. There was a lot of mis-information being spread around in there. I cleared some of it up.
