Need Advice
« on: October 15, 2007, 05:37:59 PM »

I have a 99 Dodge Avenger V6 black with 16 inch alloy wheels...cloth interior, CD player (CD currently stuck in it), AC, auto transmission (replaced with rebuilt transmission 6 months before got new car), auto doors/windows, faded paint on hood, etc (now turned into rusted a bit from sitting in sun), cruise control, keyless entry, new door handles, rear spoiler, no dents except missing piece under right headlight where fog light would be if I had fog lights (I have the piece in the trunk, but got in a small fender bender and never paid insurance deductible to get it fixed.) The car has 142,000 miles or so...can't remember exactly. I bought it new Jan 2000. It's been through four years of college.

I really don't have much of a clue about auto terminology =D, but learned a few things because of this car. The car gave me trouble on and off for a few years...internal computer or something had to be replaced ($800+), transmission (replaced 6 months before I "parked" it for $1200+), and other small problems...for the last 6 months with the replaced transmission (body shop could never find some kind of switch) the car would just shut off. I would have to wait -- put the car in neutral and roll forward/backwards until something happened or wiggle the battery cables =D and the car would start (this happened NUMEROUS times while driving down the road and starting)...after I didn't properly maintain the car, the motor started knocking. Instead of waiting and saving up a few more months for a new car, I parked it and went and bought a 07 Camry SE -- white, leather (I've had it for a year and I LOVE IT!!).

I should have known better to ever buy the Avenger since I had a 96 red one before it...but that's in the past...the Avenger has been parked behind a barn for the past year. The battery is dead.

All this for the simple question...what's my best option to sell it (parts shop, ebay, individual buyer, etc.)? How much should I ask?

Thanks!

Buying an automatic = Bad

Not maintaining it = Worse.

But at least you know it.  A knock in the engine pretty much says it all.  The motor is probably shot, you won't get a lot out of it.  Lucky for you the transmission it is known to be bad, and people are usually looking for a new one, so you can sell that for a bit.  Or you can just sell the car as is for 1500-2000, let the people know about it, and let it be their headache.

Post this up in the for sale section and get some pictures of the car.  Post where you're located and some kind of asking price.  The problem you run into with parting out, is every one will want the same ten parts, and then you're stuck with a scrap heap sitting around.

Mod List.  Um WAY too many to fit on here.  But the engine can handle about 800HP

Always keep the vehicle maintained. Even the Camry [Tonka Toyota] will suffer if you don't. Unless you are running synthetic, religously change your oil and filter every 3K. Auto trans filter and fluid, every 75k. This goes same for the Camry. It may be only a year old, but what you do now, determines how it treats you in 3 years

Thanks for replying!

Yes, I learned my lesson with the oil...a lesson I should have known upfront, but anyway.  Roll Eyes The Camry won't suffer in this area...Toyota says to change the oil every 5,000. Should I stick with the 3,000? I'm always on the go...already have 31,000 miles on the Camry and I bought it August 06.

About the 99 Avenger -- I'll get some pics. $1500 ?? Shocked My dad doesn't think I'll get more than $500 for it.

I'm in south south GA.

Lol. I'm in NW Ga. Ok. i would switch it to a Synthetic Oil [Mobil 1] 5w-30 at your next oil change. Then run ONLY that. change every 8-10k and make sure you use either a Purolator PURE ONE or a NAPA Gold oil filter. Those two filters and i mean, THOSE TWO filters are designed to do the job properly. A Fram is a destroyed engine waiting to happen.

The ASOG Oil Thread

Read that sometime. Page 2 is where i start getting descriptive and go into detail.
