No, they were supposed to REPLACE the mustang. I own a 92 Probe GL and a 90 Probe GT. There were 2 generations of the Probe.
1989-92 Ford Probe GL - L4 2.2L Auto or 5spd Ford Probe GT - L4 2.2L Turbo Auto or 5spd Ford Probe LX - V6 3.0L Auto or 5spd 1993-1997 Ford Probe SE - L4 2.0L Auto or 5spd Ford Probe GT - V6 2.5L Auto or 5spd
Wanna know what the reason why it didn't go over so well?
The Probe had lots of potential. Lack of aftermarket support for the car kept sales away from the performance enthusiasts. At the time, V8's meant big power. Withe the 302 still reigning among Fords lienup of engines in 1991, the Probe needed to appeal to a different audience other than the egotistical redneck muscleheads that dominated the south. In 1992, Consumer Reports tested all the vehicles under the 200K mark. The 92 Ford Probe was 2nd on handling, beat out only by a Mercedes Benz.
So why then, did it not sit well with the Ford market? The F22N [2.2L] Was not a Ford engine. It was Mazda's beautiful design. Ford only had a play in it with the body design. Imagine, the King of Ford engines, stock for stock, being beaten out by an engine half it's size.
What about the 3.0L V6? Was it Mazda's engine too? NO. The 3.0 was Fords brain fart. One of the tell tale signs: Egr failure. For some odd reason, Ford EGR valves go bad the quickest. Maybe it's a reflection on the company's idea of change at the time.
If I were to buy a Ford Probe, would I be able to get parts at a Mazda Dealership? Oh, you betcha. If you own a 1st Gen GT, don't count on Ford being able to supply you a replacement turbo. Even in the mid 90's when they would have been in good supply. You have to order it specifically from Mazda. Price: $2400 USD. I checked. The parts department literally said "holy sh%t". It was funny.
So then, that would mean that the 302 was better? Not necessarily. I used my 92 GL for delivering pizzas. It withstood me and had ALOT of miles put on it. Had I money to replace the transmission at the time, it would have seen 200k+ easily. When it came to Mustangs, the Probe was already setup for performance. There were no additional parts needed. The suspension was already above par. One of the areas it shined was it's 0-45 accelearation. The GL model would hit 110mph easy, and it was stable. Not only did it get good gas mileage, it was a sleeper.
What about that 2nd Generation Probe since you've carried on so much about the 1st Gen? The 2nd Gen HAD aftermarket support. But by now, Ford had developed a 4.6L V8 that replaced the 302. This 4.6L was a step up from the 302 and the Mustang enthusiasts would not let their 'Pony Car' be replaced by something with half the cylinders. The Mazda equivalent of the Ford Probe was the MX-6. Lots of goodies were available and are still available for the 2nd Gen Probe and for the MX-6 of the same year. The biggest upgrade is in the engine swap department. As long as you had the money, you could opt for a KL-ZE to be shipped in from Japan. Now this was not something you could do if you bought the car brand new. The KL-ZE is a J-Spec engine. It was not available at the dealership in America. The KL-ZE has 200BHP, is a direct fit, and only requires the same things that a simple SR20DET swap would require for the 240sx. I guarentee you will literally see the smile melt off the Mustang boys faces when they realize they just got served the number 2 spot in the race.
Well, did the 1st gen have an engine swap? Not at the time, but yes. Kia is a division of Mazda. The L4 2.0L found in the Sportages is a direct drop in and offers a decent HP and performance increase. Now obviously, the 2.0L found in the Sportages [FE3N] was not available in 1991 or 92. But it is now.
BTW DT, i'm in need of a replacement F22T, maybe. Do you know of anywhere that I can get one? WITH a working turbo?
Mustang fans quickly responded and sent Ford hundreds of thousands of angry letters asking them to save the rear-wheel drive Mustang. Ford responded and gave the rear-wheel drive Mustang one more chance and proceeded to rename the front-wheel drive version as the Probe.[
they were a replacement not the mustang if it has that on there its a smart person that knows what ford was up to and badged it. the name wasnt decided until teh stang was given another go. Probe GTs by they way are NICE
yeah, i miss my 92 GL. True it was an automatic but it was a hatch and i had dual 12 MTX's and a 300w Lightning Audio amp, patriot box [not sealed], and a Prestige head unit. It sounded good. I loved it when 'Voodoo' was playing. As well as 'Keep Hope Alive' by Crystal Method.
And actually, if you come across an FE3N for cheap, lemme know.
