97 avenger trans stutters /limp mode
« on: October 12, 2007, 02:16:13 AM »

A few days ago my daughters avenger went into limp mode, set some codes, PO700 trans control system,PO731gear 1 incorrect ratio, PO733 gear 3 incorrect ratio.I have read all the posts I could find and 1st changed fluid and filter-no help. Replaced speed sensors and reset CEL. Drove great for about 6 miles then started stuttering at take off in low gear , couple of times had to rev to 2500 to get trans to engage. Tried switching the relays on the firewall and checked all electrical connections. Has not gone into limp mode yet but only drove it 12 mile. When I got back and was sitting in the driveway, after it was warmed up, the clicking noise from the shift solenoid that is normally loud when shifting from forward to reverse was silent. After it cooled back down a couple hours later the clicking noise was back.Does this mean is is failing? Should this be the next part to be replaced? Or is it time to bite the bullet and let a trans shop or a dealer try to diagnose?

Hey Steely,

I have a couple of quick questions for you.  Do you remember where you purchased the firewall relays, and if so, what were the voltage/ampere ratings for them?  I've been pretty busy lately with school but I just finished my midterms and have a decent break with which to utilize my time.  I've been having issues with my transmission also and just need some information on those relays.  Thanks in advance for your help!  Ciao~

Not to be the bearer of bad news, and not to mention your random limp in modes,, If you had
to rev to 2500 to get the car to move,, that is your proublem, computor picks up  on this
gear ratio error and puts you in limp in,,, The issue of it working cold and not hot,, a degraded
clutch pack can sometimes work due to the  apply pistion  being  able to seal a bit better
with cold fluid,,, So long as your  still hearing the solinoids chiming off, your not in fail
safe,,, once the go silent that means your voltage has ben shut down putting you in and
2nd gear and reverse and it goes in hard due to max line pressure..... Once in a while
I see and bad onboard computor ,  more often bad input or output sensor and solinoid
pk  but more often than anything,, the unit needs a rebuild.. Roger Reynolds ,,

About the relays... all I did was switch the connectors from one to another, I didn't get new ones but I remember reading here somewhere that radio shack is the way to go..., way cheaper.

And as for trans. problems..yep its fried..everything is great till she warms up then slipping, and limp mode comes quickly.  Went car shopping and one dealer told me trans was out and offered $300 for the car another said nothing was wrong and offered $2000.??  Does anyone know if adding a cooler will keep the fluid cool enough for me to drive it 10 mile a day for a while or am I wasting more money on this car?
