The sensors are in the fenders. They should be glad the bags didn't deploy.

Are you ok, the Avenger had a 5 star safety rating and airbags are bloody expensive as hell to replace. I agree you should be glad they didn't go off.

If it isnt a head on collison it shouldnt go off.
If it is a head on it has to be a fast enough deceleration to make the sensor hit. I hit mine sorta in the way you did but due to the fact that i didnt slow down very fast i didnt have mine deploy. Air bags are VERY dangerous and the sensors are built to make sure they only go off when the car has a very sudden decrese in speed like from 50 to 20 in less than a second then BOOM

Airbag deployment is a very complex thing , as a 20 year paramedic/firefighter I've seen very simple accidents blow airbags as well as very serious accidents not deploy airbags ... My understanding is there are two sensors one going front to rear the other going side to side , they monitor the car for abrupt movements if they exceed X in one direction or the other they will go off ... if there is an off center hit they both moust exceed a certain value to blow the bags ...

i had a woman pull out in front of me and run over the driver-side headlight, then the truck's step rail came crashing down on the center frontend taking my radiator out, and mine didn't deploy… thank God! i was only doing approx. 10-15mph tho, so i'm sure that had all to do with it… according to what ppl are saying here. the car is def not unsafe… not anymore than most any other car anyway.

Air bags actually have dual senors. One set in in the front/side/rear where ever the airbag its self is located. Then there is a second safety sensor that has to be triggered as well. In low speed collisions air bags kill more then they safe thats why the new generations have this second switch built it. Most likey you hit the first set of sensors, but the second set deemed the impact to light to actually set them off.

dual stage airbags deploy but they inflate at a slower less aggressive rate than if you were to have a full head on. The sensors work off of vibrations on the car if there is enough it goes off if there isnt then it doesnt. Its actually a switch inside that does not allow current to flow unless it picks up the vibrations. other sensors determine the amount and some even determine the power of the bad based on a persons weight, sensed through the seat.
