i'm no expert here.. but it will keep the torque converter from locking up. since the torque converter is basically a clutch..a fluid clutch which allows some slip. when the torque converter goes into lockup the input and output shafts rotate at a 1:1 ratio. it's not always ideal, think of it like trying to pass a car at highway speeds without downshifting. you are relying totally on the engine output vs the torque multiplication of a converter.
