starter info

So… does anyone know if I can replace just the starter solenoid or if I have to replace the entire starter? I believe my solenoid has cah-putt on me, so I did a quick search on advance auto and autozone sites to see what sorta prices I'm looking at. Well, advance states I can get just a solenoid, but autozone doesn't have just the solenoid for sale… it has the entire starter only. That has kinda confused me. I know the solenoid is mounted to the starter, but do not know if I can simply unmount and replace it or if I have to replace the entire starter. Will someone please clarify this for me, and maybe give me a brief description of how easy (or difficult) replacing it will be? Also, any suggestions on what/how is best for all of this will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

ooh and you can test it to see whats really bad too all you gotta do is take it off set it one something sturdy (we put it in a vice grip that is mounted to a steel table) and attach a wire to it that will supply 12 volts. it should run he starter and then if you attack it to another it will activate teh solenoid however im not to experienced in this yet so may want to ask about this one i know theres someone else here thats a mechanic that im sure can give you more detail on this one.

Thanks. I ended up just replacing the entire starter… solenoid and all. Fig'd if i've gotta remove the starter just to replace the solenoid, I may as well replace the entire thing… cuz that thing is a pain to get in and out. Esp with my limited knowledge and tools. Got it and the Venge starts up beautifully every time now.
