lots of drag when the windows are down, you can actually save gas using the a/c.

MythBusters- Gotta love 'em, they also proved that leaving your trucks tailgate up allowed air to flow easier over the truck creating less drag- would of never thought that would be the case.
didn't they prove that any speed above 55mph you get better gas mileage with a/c and any speed below 55mph you get better with the windows down? not sure why 55mph is the magic # but it kinda makes since that the slower you go the better gas mileage you'll get with windows down. There's less drag and, usually, when you're going slow you're in more stop-n-go traffic so the a/c would prob hender your mileage since you'll be accelerating more (and you'll have less power to do so with a/c).

I am getting awesome gas mileage now that I am riding my bicycle to work.  I am actually getting better mileage with my car cause I am not making little 2.5 mile trips 4 times a day, I am only driving on the across town trips.
i hear that! my mileage SUCKS anymore b/c i only have to drive 5 miles to work rite now. doesn't help that the entire 5 miles i'm basically accelerating too… stoopid ppl pulling out in front of me or turning or traffic lights, etc. i need to get a bike! ppl keep talking bout "i wish i only had to drive 5 miles to work." i tell 'em no you don't… i've had more problems with my car and mileage since i started working where i do than i ever had, and i blame it on the lack of distance i have to drive. plus, i just like driving… it relaxes me (for the most part).

its true anything under ROUGHLY 55 is better to have your windows down and anything above is better to run with the widows up. However the way i see it is as long as there is turbulance inside the cabin then there is to much drag and i roll mine up at 50 since thats when it starts to get pretty intense ive been getting much better MPG recently with the changed spark plugs and the new highway maners(i drive highway a lot now)

Same here. Gas mileage went from about 290 a tank to 360 a tank by taking the highway. Of course I could let it go to 400. My mpg is roughly 23.5...Sad huh? BUt I just got a K&N FIPK Intake so mabye it'll go up... If I can stay outta the gas Grin

Ive got more to do to my car to fix my MPG problems i have gaskets that are just plain shot, i have an reallly bad exhaust leak and poor ignition wires too there is just so much that needs to be done thats just the basics of it. not to mention i found a HORRIBLE tranny leak just yesterday. its been slippin a lot and put more fluid in and it was good then started it all again so i got it up on a lift and YIKES its like a waterfall almost. REALLY gotta get that one fixed.

that makes sense. guess every car will be diff. i pretty much roll mine up when the turbulance in the cabin gets bad also. hwy driving is def better for MPG any day… i seriously miss it!
