Wire Tapping... shhh. [BV]
« on: September 18, 2007, 09:13:02 AM »

What is the proper method for tapping a wire? BV if you could, draw up a diagram. The car's previous owner stripped a 1 inch part of the wire and simply wrapped the other wire around it and electrical taped it. Is there any better method than that, b/c the fuse kept popping after i removed those Lime Snot green LED underglows [and before] when i would try to use the 12v lighter.
Now i'm halfway through doing a console conversion, so i've removed the lighter AND cleaned all of the spray paint off it. I'm hoping that was the problem but i need to know the proper taping method b/c i'm going to be using 2 LED's to tell me from a distance if my car is locked or not. I'm thinking of taping either the interior lights or the power wire on the door locks. It'll probably be the lights seeing as how that will give me the greatest range of LED mounting locations.

There are hundreds of ways to tap/splice wires ... tape and wrapping are perfectly OK if done properly ..
Butt splice connectors , wire nuts,3m connectors ALL work too ...

So would the way it was wrapped, cause it to pop fuses?

===-o-===
[basically just hooked around a naked part on the power wire and taped over]

Every time i put like a car charger or an FM transmitter in there, it blew the fuse. Now, i built my own 'battery pack' to do 12v testing and the lighter works fine [using the same fm transmittor that blew the fuse earilier], of course there's no inline fuse to pop.

Thats one of the LED's i'll be using.

And oh, that battery pack is just 8 AA batterys linked together [using aluminum foil strips about 1.5 inches long] with a wire on the last battery's negative and the first battery's positve and wrapped in ALOT of electrical tape.

O-O O-O
 |   |   |    |
O O-O O----------<       <---negative or positve depending on what you started with on the other side
 |______________<     <---negative or postive depending on which side of the AA isn't connected to another AA.

If anyone attempts this, remember, POSITIVE TOUCHS NEGATIVE AND VICE VERSA.
(+)-(-)= Electrical flow.
(+)-(+)= Nothing
(-)-(-)= Now what did i just say? NOTHING. lol

IF it's fully insulated that shouldn't have popped fuses ... unless the connection was loose and causing resistance ...

I just use my drill battery to test 12 volt stuff ....

I got a "T" type wire connector with a seperate blade terminal. You know the kind that closes over the wire and snaps tight.

On those kinds, should i strip a little bit of the power wire or will the blade itself do a sufficient job?

T  <---T terminal
Y  <---Blade terminal

If that makes any sense. I don't feel like taking a pic and uploading it. lol.

Ok. i finally got around to taking the pics.

These are the 2 seperate pieces

And this is what it looks like. basically it clamps on the wire, but i'm wondering, would it be better to expose the wire a little or should i just let it hopefully cut through the insulation. Or will it actually cut through?

tell me what you think BV. Especially if you've used these before. lol

Truthfully not a big fan ... when you crinp those thru the wire there is very little contact and it actually cuts wire strands ... We were ordered to use those at the shop to install remote starts and alarms after a 400% increase in call backs they let us go back ...

Back to what? And elaborate beyond 'what we used before' lol. I'm just trying to do this as cleanly as possible

If I'm tapping into a wire I strip back about 1/2" of insulation wrap the "new" wire into the existing wire , Solder connection then wrap with electrical tape ...
If I'm adding extra circuits I strip back the existing wire then add the additional wires then use crimp caps then tape over the crinp caps
Crimp caps are shaped like wire nuts , but the tops instead of twisting you use a wire crimper on ...

So i guess i'll be twisting and taping. I have a soldering gun thta i'd like to use, however, there's no way the cord will reach where i need to go.

Given that it will be 3 wires, think i should braid em? lol  Cheesy
