Timing Belts and water pumps
« on: August 29, 2007, 06:06:50 AM »

Hello!
I need to replace the timing belt and I am curious if there are and great brands or at least ones I should stay away from. I have searched the forums a little and found no mention of good or bad brands. Please let me know what you guys think if you have replaced the belt before. Also what about water pump brands? Thanks.

i used a goodyear gatorback belt. they're good belts. remanufactured water pumps are a bit cheaper than new pumps. wouldn't hurt to spend an extra few on somthing as important as the water pump.

I use Gates belts (NAPA) and have always had good luck.  I would always ALWAYS spend the few bucks extra for a new water pump with a lifetime warranty.  If it goes and takes your belts the manufacturer should cover any damage.  That, and at least here we have bad luck with remans.

I just took off a perfectly good Mopar water pump only to find the o ring behind it had been seeping instead. The way it drains the valley is to the back of the pan rail. I put some dye in the antifreeze a couple of weeks before changing it and the only place it was leaking was behind the WP at the o ring.

I figured ...use both gaskets and the o ring and go ahead and install the new pump.

bad venge is talking about the hydraulic belt tensioner. basically a dealer only item. the timing belt kit the parts stores sell include new idler and tensioner pulleys, but not the hydraulic tensioner. just wanted to make you aware becuase a lot of people order those kits and expect to see the belt tensioner in there. the listings are a bit misleading.

After the TSB mitsu put out in about 1992 on auto tensioners...they don't fail anymore do they?

I have seen the bearings in the idler come apart and waste an engine though.

BINGO. Do the kit. Your going to spend more money, but while your in there do the tensioner and idler pulley. Its a labor intensive job and the kit means cheap insurance. Dont cheap out on critical parts like these, buy the best you can get your hands on. Go to Napa or a professional auto parts warehouse in your area. If you have the 3.0, do the O rings on the intake crossover tube behind the water pump as well.

2.5l has the crossover and rings also.

Once mitsu fixed the hydraulic tensioner on the 89 and 90 models prior to these I have not seen a bad one. On the other hand ...I have seen the bearings come apart on the idlers and air out cylinder heads when the valves start dropping.
